Five Firsts: David & Adrian Mowry of Beaucoup Blue
NAME: Adrian Mowry, David Mowry
BAND AFFILIATION: Beaucoup Blue
INSTRUMENT: Resonator guitar, six & twelve string guitar
1. THE FIRST ALBUM I EVER BOUGHT WAS …
David: Probably “Scarlet Ribbons” by Harry Belafonte
Adrian: Led Zeppelin “IV.” I think I was around 11 or 12 years old. It really intrigued me and scared me at the same time, and, of course, like most teenagers at the time I tried to learn “Stairway To Heaven” on the guitar. Now I can’t even listen to the song.
2. THE FIRST CONCERT THAT I EVER SAW WAS …
David: I believe Peter, Paul & Mary in Springfield, Mass.
Adrian: Besides seeing my father play as a little kid, I think it may have been around the same time as my first album was my first concert at JFK stadium in Philly. It was a festival with the Police, Madness, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts and REM. I remember it was over 100 degrees; people were passing out all over. And REM was booed and had Frisbees thrown at them; then the next year, they were all over the radio.
3. THE FIRST MUSICAL INSTRUMENT I EVER OWNED OR PLAYED WAS …
David: It was a little mahogany plywood Key guitar.
Adrian: My father’s 1965 Kalamazoo Epiphone. I used to sneak it into my room when he wasn’t around try and to pick songs off the radio. He always wondered why his strings didn’t last very long. I have that guitar to this day.
4. THE FIRST SONG THAT I EVER PERFORMED IN PUBLIC WAS …
David: I believe it might have been “Sinner Man,” the old gospel tune.
Adrian: “Classical Gas” by Mason Williams. First song I sang, I think, was “If I Were A Carpenter” by Tim Hardin. I was real attracted to those melancholy ballads – still am.
5. THE FIRST BAND I WAS EVER IN WAS …
David: A group out of Cambridge, Mass. Very short lived. I believe under my own name. 1967-68.
Adrian: I had a garage band in high school, and we played a few parties. We broke up before we could come up with a name. The drummer stole my girlfriend.
Yes, it’s a special double-barrelled Five Firsts. (Does that make it Ten Firsts?) The father and son roots music duo Beaucoup Blue features David and Adrian Mowry, and they’ll be making their return to Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs at 8pm on Friday. Singer-songwriter Greg Klyma opens the show. Tix are $15 in advance; $17 at the door.
