Festival Fever: Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, 7/14-17/11
The Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival kicks off at the Walsh Farm in Oak Hill at 2pm on Thursday (July 14) and runs through Sunday. Among the many featured bands are the Sam Bush Band, J.D. Crowe & the New South, Chris Thile & Michael Daves, O’Brien Party of Seven, the Del McCoury Band, the Yonder Mountain String Band, the Infamous Stringdusters, the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band and many more.
Needless to say, it’s the biggest and best bluegrass festival in the northeast. In fact, the International Bluegrass Music Association named Grey Fox the Best Bluegrass Event in the world in 2009. If you’ve been to the fest, you already know why.
The fest also hosts the best homegrown Nippertown talent, too, including the Gibson Brothers, Jim Gaudet & the Railroad Boys, MotherJudge and John Kirk & Trish Miller.
Last year’s Grey Fox Fest was fabulous – very well organized, plenty of opportunities to get up close and personal with the world-class musicians and, of course, a wonderful line-up of some of the very best bluegrass musicians on the planet. The grounds are well laid-out, and it’s easy to get around. And there’s a variety of food and beverage concessions – at quite affordable prices. Read our review of last year’s fest here.
While there’s wall-to-wall pickin’ & singin’ going on at the Main Stage throughout the fest, don’t overlook the more intimate workshops and mini-concerts, either. For instance, there’s a banjo workshop with J.D. Crowe, Tony Trischka, Mike Munford and Bill Keith at 2pm on Saturday. Now that’s a mighty serious five-string summit meeting…
At the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, full-fest tix (with camping included) are $180; single day tix are $50 (Thursday only), $60 (Friday or Saturday) and $30 (Sunday).
