4/29/11: Today’s Tips: Friday
MUSIC: Ramsey Lewis @ the College of Saint Rose’s Massry Center, Albany. Originally, this was slated to be a concert by jazz pianist Dr. Billy Taylor, but he died in December. So Taylor’s longtime friend and fellow jazz master Lewis is stepping in to offer a special solo performance in Taylor’s memory. Q&A session at 7:30pm; concert at 8pm. $25.
ARTS WALK: Troy Night Out @ various locations, Troy. It’s the last Friday of the month, which means that it’s time to stroll around downtown Troy and soak up some visual art, some live music and maybe some wine & cheese, too. 5-9pm. FREE.
MUSIC: Mia Dyson @ the Mission Bar + Tapas, Pittsfield. The super Australian singer-songwriter-guitarist celebrates the release of her new EP, “You and Me,” produced by Dave Stewart of Eurythmics. With Lonesome Val & Todd Nelson opening the show. 8pm.
ART EXHIBITION: “Knock It Off” @ Albany Center Gallery, Albany. More than 150 original works by local artists inspired by the works of the great masters. Sales benefit the Albany Center Gallery. 6-9pm. FREE.
MUSIC: Triskele @ the Parting Glass, Saratoga Springs. The all-woman Celtic quartet celebrates the release of their new album, “Look Back, Don’t Stare.” 8pm. $5.
TALK/MUSIC: “The Life and Music of Mongo Santamaria: A Conversation with Ray Vega” @ 831 Jay St., Albany. The Ahora, Latin/Jazz! series kicks off with a salon featuring spoken word, music, videos clips. 7:30pm. $10.
MUSIC: “Hyper-Rainforest” @ EMPAC at RPI, Troy. The world premiere of Francisco Lopez’s 80-channel immersive concert created from a decade’s worth of smapling natural sounds recorded in the world’s rain forests. 8 & 9:30pm. $15; seniors and students $10. FILM: “Jealousy (Variete)” @ UAlbany’s Page Hall, Albany. Director Ewald André Dupont’s 1925 silent German Expressionist cinema classic is screened with live piano accompaniment by Mike Schiffer. 7:30pm. FREE.
