4/15/11: Today’s Tips: Friday


MUSIC: Houston Person @ the First Unitarian Society’s Whisperdome, Schenectady. A special spring concert in honor of the 25th anniversary of A Place for Jazz, as well as Jazz Appreciation Month – featuring the veteran jazz sax master and his band. 8pm. $15; children under 12 FREE.

MUSIC: Garage to Glory II @ the College of Saint Rose’s Performance Studio, Albany. It’s the finals of the Saint Rose/Times Union-sponsored battle of the singer-songwriters, as 10 Nippertown musicians duke it out for top honors and big prizes. 8pm. FREE, but registration required.

MUSIC: Stew & the Negro Problem @ Club Helsinki Hudson, Hudson. Yeah, they won a Tony Award for their rock musical “Passing Strange.” But they also rock out. Seriously. Read more here. 9pm. $18.

ARTS WALK: Art Night Schenectady @ various locations, Schenectady. Visual art, music, good times and fun. 5-9pm. FREE.

MUSIC: Tom Paxton and Janis Ian @ The Egg, Albany. A double-bill of two stellar singer-songwriters from the ’60s who are both still carrying on the good fight. 7:30pm. $29.50.

DANCE: “Against the Wall” @ the MarketPlace Gallery, Albany. It’s not just for art anymore. Samson Contompasis’ funky art space is hosting everything from concerts to punk rock readings these days. Tonight, it’s Rachelle Smith-Stallman’s dance performance featuring dancers Maureen Munoz, Diane Betts, Emily Marynczak and Maria Lazaro (in addition to Smith-Stallman) with a live, improvisational score by Gabriel Stallman. 7pm.

MUSIC: Del Rey & Suzy Thompson @ Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs. Resonator guitarist-ukulele queen Rey teams up with fab blues fiddler Thompson to celebrate the release of their new funky, old-timey party-music album, “Hen Party.” 8pm. $18 in advance; $20 at the door.

MUSIC/FUNDRAISER: Slick Fitty @ MacGeary’s, Albany. You might know her as professional photographer Linda Conley. Or you might know by the name she rolls with on the track with the Albany All Stars Roller DerbyK.D. Bang. Either way, her car was broken into during a recent bout at the Washington Ave Armory, and she lost thousands of dollars of her photographic equipment. Tonight’s bash is a fundraiser for her, complete with drink specials, raffles, a bake sale and some good old-fashioned American rock & roll. 9pm. $5. (You can also go here to donate.)

MUSIC: Duke Robillard @ the Van Dyck, Schenectady. The blues-jazz-roots guitar master is back in town. 7 & 9:30pm. $18 in advance; $22 at the door.

MUSIC: The Backburners @ Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, Troy. Don’t know the Backburners? Chances are good that you know some of the members – guitarist-vocalist Kyle Esposito, steel guitarist-vocalist Kevin Maul, bassist-vocalist Doug Marcus, drummer Manuel Quintana and percussionist Bob Resnick. Sure sounds good to us… 10pm. FREE.

MUSIC: Rubblebucket @ the Bearsville Theater, Woodstock. They’re offering a sneak preview of their upcoming album, “Omega La La,” produced by Eric Broucek (LCD Soundsystem, !!!, Holy Ghost). With Millionyoung. 9pm. $15.

MUSIC: The Arch Stanton Quartet @ 9 Maple Avenue, Saratoga Springs. Spaghetti western-inspired jazz combo. 9pm.

MUSIC: MYCON @ Valentine’s Music Hall, Albany. The fine folks at SwordPaw present an evening of eccentric electronica and lots more. With Ghoul Poon, R-Garcia and Rawstrumentals. 7:30pm. $7.

MUSIC: Blackcat Elliot @ Savannah’s, Albany. Rock, rock, rock… With the Knyghts of Fuzz and Plastic Jesus. 9pm.

PARTICIPATORY DANCE: Swing Dance with Kip Beaco’s Lucky 5 @ the Elks Club, Albany. Swing dance lessons by Chester Freeman at 7pm. Dance at 8pm. $15; students $10.

MUSIC: Ten Year Vamp @ the Bayou Cafe, Albany. Debbie Gabrione and the boys are back at the Bayou. 10:30pm. $5.

    Free show alert! Rudeke (roo-deek) will be at Wolf’s 1-11 on Wolf Rd tonight, 9-1. Yeah, we do that song by Mumford & Sons. Yeah, we’ll probably do the “clean” version ’cause there may be kids there.

    Two student shows opening tonight at The Teaching Gallery at Hudson Valley Community College. The Annual Juried Student Art Exhibit, and, Departure: Advanced Study in Drawing and Painting End of Year Exhibit. Reception: 5 – 7 p.m.; Awards: 5:45 p.m.
