At first glance, you might not think that they have a whole lot in common with each other, but today they will each be honored with the National Medal of Arts, a career-achievement award that President Obama will confer in a ceremony this afternoon at the White House.

Oh, yes – and they’re all Nippertown residents, too. Rollins makes his home in Germantown, Columbia County; Taylor lives in Washington, Mass.; and Jacob’s Pillow is based in Beckett, Mass.

The other recipients of the National Medal of Arts today are actor Meryl Streep, musicians Van Cliburn and Quincy Jones, “To Kill a Mockingbird” author Harper Lee, sculptor Mark di Suvero, theater critic and producer Robert Brustein and poet Donald Hall.

The White House said that Lee and Streep are not expected to attend the ceremony, which will be streamed live at 1:45pm today.
