7/29/10: Today’s Tips: Thursday
MUSIC: Yim Yames, Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore @ Bearsville Theater, Woodstock. My Morning Jacket’s Yames (or Jim James, if you prefer) joins the Appalachian Voices Tour in support of the album, “Dear Companion,” which he produced for cellist Sollee and singer-songwriter Moore. Their show at the Linda (without Yames/James) in March was a Top 10-of-the-year dazzler. (Related story: Sollee/Moore concert review) With Simone Felice of the Duke and the King. (Related story) 9pm. $25 general admission.
MUSIC: Who’s Bad @ Alive at Five at the Corning Preserve’s Riverfront Park, Albany. The moon-walkin, crotch-grabbin reincarnation of Michael Jackson. Will men openly weep? Will mothers hide their sons? Will there be a tribute to Bubbles? With the Big Smoothies. 5pm. Free.
HORSE RACING: Mid-Summer St. Patrick’s Day @ the Saratoga Race Course, Saratoga Springs. What goes better together than horseracing fans and Lucky Charms? Expect plenty of traditional Irish food and drink as well as Irish music and dance – the McKrells, the Orange County AOH Pipes and Drums, the Boland School of Irish Dance, Celtic Sessions and the Fergus Begley Band. Oh, yeah, a t-shirt giveaway, too. Post time: 1pm.
GRAND OPENING: The Judge’s Inn, 254 Broadway, Troy. Yeah, it’s actually been open for several weeks now. But they’re just making it official with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 5pm today, followed by the Working Man’s Jam at 7pm, hosted by members of Big Frank & the Bargain Bingers. “All are welcome to get up and sing a few tunes, either solo or as duo, or what have you,” explains Big Frank Novko. “If you don’t want to sing, you can just sit in with us if you like.” Or, of course, you could just sit and listen. Free.
MUSIC: Mark Erelli and Jeffrey Foucault @ the Gypsy Joynt, Great Barrington. Two fabulous singer-songwriters who teamed up earlier this year to collaborate on an album of murder ballads, “Seven Curses,” which ranges from Paul Siebel’s “Louise” to Neil Young’s “Powderfinger.” (Related stories: Erelli concert review, Erelli CD review) 8pm. $15.
