A political satire disguised as a techno-thriller, Sleep Dealer is set in the near future and examines issues of globalization, immigrant labor, privatization. It’s been raved about by everyone from io9 to The LA Times. The screening features a special appearance by the director, New York filmmaker Alex Rivera. In Spanish with English subtitles.
Presented in conjunction with EMPAC’s current art exhibit, “Dancing on the Ceiling: Art & Zero Gravity,” this Academy Award-winning film documents, through both archival footage and recreations, the planning and exhilarating execution of Phillipe Petit’s daring, illegal tightrope walk between the towers of the World Trade Center in 1974.
Ballet, beauty and culture shock come together in the story of Sokvannara Sar, a talented Cambodian dancer transplanted to New York to audition for the School of the American Ballet.
Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning star in this music-fueled story of the ground-breaking, all girl, teenage rock band of the 1970s, The Runaways, that paved the way for future generations of women in rock music.
Starring Isabelle Huppert and Pascal Greggory, Gabrielle is an adaptation of a Joseph Conrad short story that examines the disintegration of the marriage of a wealthy Parisian couple. Presented in conjunction with the exhibit “Giovanni Boldini in Impressionist Paris,” currently on view at The Clark. In French with English subtitles.
