Nippertown: Artist Hotbed

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Bustamante T-ShirtIt’s like watching a trainwreck, although I have to confess I can’t look away. Work of Art: The Next Great Artist, the American Idol of the art world, just aired their third episode on Wednesday.

Honestly, I don’t know who to feel sorrier for. This week, the contestants were reduced to marketing shills for Penguin Books, but the judges, with the exception of Jerry Saltz, constantly come off as the worst type of shallow hipster sharks.

Perhaps they’re not that bad and it’s all in the editing. Yes, I’m sure that’s it.

The biggest, best-est, cheering-est moment so far was back in week one, when RPI professor Nao Bustamante sweetly replied to the judges criticizing the abstracted nature of her piece, “I’m not responsible for your experience of my work.” Yeah, baby! She even has T-shirts for sale on her website.

And now former Nippertown resident Judith Braun has some interesting photos on her Facebook page:
