There are an awful lot of festivals stacked up this weekend, including moe.down at Snow Ridge Ski Resort in Turin; WordXWord Festival in Pittsfield; and the Hudson Music Festival, the Basilica Music Festival and Blues, Brews & BBQ Festival, all in Hudson.

And if you’re a jazz fan, you can put together your own festival this weekend, but you’d better gas up before you head out ’cause there’s some driving involved.

Here are some of your A-list jazz destinations for the weekend:

“It was a Chet Atkins album. I can’t remember the title of it, but I remember that the first song on the album was `Swedish Rhapsody.’

I can’t remember whether I already owned a guitar at that point or whether I just had a ukulele, but I’ll tell you, I had never ever heard anybody play guitar like that before. That was some serious guitar playing.”

Jazz guitar great Larry Coryell teams up with blues guitarist Murali Coryell for a rare father-and-son performance at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock at 9pm on Saturday (August 4). Tix are $30.

Keep It Goin’: Levon Helm’s Midnight Rambles Continue His Legacy

Story by Bokonon

Good news from Woodstock. Levon Helm Studios has decided to “Keep It Goin’.”

To that end, the Studios have initiated a fundraising program that will allow Midnight Rambles to continue apace at the historic barn on Plochmann Lane.

Those who’ve attended a Ramble know that few experiences match the incredible music and camaraderie that goes on within those walls. Even with Levon gone, his bandmates and their special guests will keep his memory alive and keep the barn rockin’.

LIVE: Sarah Fimm @ the Bearsville Theater, 6/30/12

Sarah Fimm

Review and photograph by Timothy Reidy

For me, this was really two shows in one. The first was an art exhibition featuring “Sparkle Park: Mirrors of Near Infinite Possibility,” Sarah Fimm’s art installation outside the Bearsville Theater with over 1,000 mirrors and plenty of solar lights. Folks were given 3D glasses, so the mirrors would sparkle even more. The park changed over the course of the evening, as the sun went down and the solar lights shined.

The second show was the music part. I was treated to a lounge duo, an electronic performance, a classic rock line-up and finally singer-songwriter-artist-pianist Sarah Fimm bringing everybody together. Among the many notable Woodstock musicians who participated in the performance were Joel Bluestein, David Baron,
Danny Blume,
Andrew Shober,
Manuel Quintana
, Pete Caigan
, Peter Buettner,
Jeffrey Barnes,
Denise Parent

, Jeremy Bernstein and the Hooligans.

However, I was the one on stage, as the show in the theater was performed on the main floor, sort of in the round. While it made for some sound challenges in getting the balance right, it certainly provided a unique performance space.

The Hooligans gave a jam quality to their classic sound. Sarah Fimm brought along a cavalcade of stars also, performing various covers such as “Freedom” and “I Put a Spell on You,” as well as some of her own rocking works.

It was a very friendly show that capped off my long day well.

“The first record album I ever bought was probably ‘Carousel,’ oddly enough. The original cast album. No, actually, it was probably the movie soundtrack album.

And a Gene Krupa record.

And actually, you could probably still find both of those albums on my shelf somewhere today.”

He’s a founding member of both Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship. He’s a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. And he’s no stranger to Woodstock. Guitarist-vocalist Paul Kanter will step up to the microphone to lead the current incarnation of Jefferson Starship in concert at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock on Friday (June 29). The Johnny Monster Band opens the show at 8:30pm, followed by Dirty Blind at 9:15pm. Tix are $25, $35 & $50.

The house band included Donald Fagan of Steely Dan on organ and long-time Bob Dylan collaborator Larry Campbell on electric guitar, as well as fiddle and lap steel. The musical bar was set high for the more than 20 artists who participated in the Woodstock Day School benefit concert and birthday tribute to Bob Dylan, and as a whole, and individually each in their own way, the artists met or surpassed that bar.
