A rainstorm hovered ominously in the sky last Friday evening. Would they bring the Woodstock Allstars inside the Stewart House, where the audience and band would be in tight quarters? Or was the concert going to be outside? Thankfully, the show wasn’t moved indoors, but nevertheless, the band was hot.

At their annual concert in Athens’ Riverfront Park, David Malachowski’s Allstars played a whopping two-hour set of mostly standards peppered with a handful of Malachowski originals. And the Allstars lived up to their name. Daniel A. Weiss manned the stage-left keyboards, while organist Pete Levin anchored the other side of the stage. Brother Tony Levin “filled in” on bass for the usual Graham Maby, while Gary Burke provided the muscle and big beat behind the drums.

Billed as “The Reviewers at The Egg,” the tenth anniversary celebration of the American Roots and Branches concert series featured several of the Capital Region’s music and entertainment journalists and their bands. Now they get to see what it feels like to have all their hard work analyzed and boiled down to three or four paragraphs. This would have been the perfect opportunity to get even for any of the things they may have written about other artists, but unfortunately (fortunately?), the evening was quite enjoyable.

BAND AFFILIATION: David Malachowski & the Woodstock Allstars
INSTRUMENT: Vocals, guitar

1. THE FIRST ALBUM I EVER BOUGHT WAS … It’s hard to remember that far back, but I think it was actually a single of a Beatles song. I recently uncovered a box of 45s out of my mother’s attic, and there are some great singles from the early ’70s – the Beatles, Rare Earth, the Rolling Stones. It’s a great little collection I forgot all about. I’m sure my first record is in there.

The music was great.

A batch of some of Nippertown’s finest homegrown musical talent graced the stage at the Palace Theatre on Thursday night. Slick Fitty kicked off the evening’s festivities by steamrolling through some gritty, roots-oriented rock & roll. Sirsy was in the number two slot, and the dynamic duo of Melanie Krahmer and Rich Libutti had no problem filling the theater, as they ripped through the title track of their latest album, “Revolution,” and served up new ones like “Goner” as well.

All too rarely does an “allstar” band deliver as a band, but guitarslinger David Malachowski and the Woodstock Allstars lived up to their name at The Linda in Albany on Friday night.

The evening got off to a somewhat rocky start with “Let’s Get Started,” a brand new original tune sung by Machan Taylor that the band had never played before. While the song was solid, the playing was too tentative.

Thankfully, it didn’t take long for the band to kick into gear. Of course, that’s no surprise when the musicians are of the caliber of organist Pete Levin, bassist Graham Maby and drummer Gary Burke.

CD: David Malachowski’s “The Secret Life of Colonel David”

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

David Malachowski: The Secret Life of Colonel David(DavidMalachowski.com, 2010):

Woodstock’s David Malachowski is a guitarslinger.

He’s toured all over the country making his fretboard magic with folks like roadhouse honky-tonkers Commander Cody & the Lost Planet Airmen, British blues pioneers Savoy Brown, old-school country singer Janie Frickie, the Band’s Garth Hudson and a little Canadian singer named Shania Twain.

In addition, he’s been a longtime regular on the Nippertown music scene, playing with – among others – blues legend Ernie Williams, alt-country combo Mechanical Bull, popster Greg Kroll and the short-lived but potent rock supergroup Nobody – which also featured J.J. Hogan (Bloom), Chris Wyse (Ozzy Osbourne, Owl) and Melanie Krahmer (Sirsy).

He’s also served as musical director, guitarist and actor in a number of productions at Albany’s Capital Repertory Theatre, including the ever-popular “Always…Patsy Cline,” “Hank Williams: Lost Highway” and “It Ain’t Nothing But the Blues.”

And lately, he’s also been heading up another supergroup musical aggregation, the Woodstock AllStars. He’ll be leading them into The Linda in Albany on Friday (January 22) and the Iridium in Manhattan on Wednesday (January 27). The band includes drummer Gary Burke, bassist Graham Maby, organist Pete Levin, vocalist Machan Taylor, pianist Daniel A. Weiss, harmonicat Dennis Gruenling and saxman Erik Lawrence.

But one thing that Malachowski hasn’t done during his illustrious musical career is to make a record of his own. Until now.
