Real Good for Free: Lake George Jazz Weekend, 9/19-20

August 14th, 2009, 8:42 am by Greg

One of the best music values around, the Lake George Jazz Weekend offers two days of free, world-class in the beautiful setting of Shepard Park with Lake George shimmering just behind the stage.

I’ve seen countless truly magificent performances at the fest over the years – including the ageless Chico Hamilton, the great Jimmy Scott and a heartwrenching performance by David Amram just days after 9/11.

The fest was in danger of extinction this year, but organizer Paul Pines and sponsoring organization the Lake George Arts Project thankfully managed to make it happen again this year despite the abysmal economic downturn. A special thanks goes out to angels Kenneth and Susan Gruskin.

And they obviously didn’t skimp on the talent, either. Here’s the schedule of performances:

1pm: Bill Mays’ Inventions Trio
2:45pm: The Ignacio Berroca Quartet
4:30pm: Giacomo Gates

1pm: The Roland Vasquez Quintet
2:45pm: The Steve Turre Quintet

Festival of Writers

July 28th, 2009, 10:01 am by Greg

William Kennedy.
Andy Rooney.
Paul Grondahl.

Three of the most notable writers that Albany has produced.

As a benefit for the Rensselaerville Library, Rensselaerville is hosting a very special Festival of Writers at various locations around town from Friday, July 31-Sunday, August 2. Readings, films, picnics, book sales, literary discussions and much more will be taking place over the course of the three-day fest.

But the perhaps the main event will be taking place at the Rensselaerville Meeting Center at 4:30pm Saturday, August 1 – a 75-minute discussion between Kennedy and Rooney moderated by the Times Union’s Grondahl. Will they discuss the current dismal state of the newspaper business? A much-needed cocktail reception will follow at 6pm.
