Sadly, the performance of thingNY’s experimental comic book opera “ADDDDDDDDD” – which was slated to take place at the Brick Elephant in Valley Falls on Sunday afternoon – has been cancelled. We had absolutely no idea what to expect, but we were definitely looking forward to it. Now we’re bummed…
Fortunately, there’s still more on the calendar for the Brick Elephant, a fabulous former church that’s been re-utilized as a performance space by avant composer-musician Mary Jane Leach.
At 3pm on Sunday, June 27, the DownTown Ensemble will perform “Determinacy/Indeterminacy.” Featuring Daniel Goode, Larry Polansky and Peter Zummo, the DownTown Ensemble is one of the last surviving performance groups of the ’70s-’80s associated with the envelope-pushing musical styles that emerged around the SoHo loft concert scene and venues such as the Kitchen, Experimental Intermedia, the Alternative Museum and the Clocktower.
The Brick Elephant program will feature improvisatory works by noted jazz composer-keyboardist Carla Bley, as well as one of John Cage’s best known works “Indeterminacy,” performed by narrator William Hellermann and pianist Joseph Kubera.
A reception and conversation with the performers will follow the performance. Admission is by donation.

It was wall-to-wall premieres of 21st-century music in Valley Falls last Saturday, as Re-soundings presented A Festival of Firsts. More than eight hours of adventurous modern music echoed (and resounded) off the walls of The Brick Elephant, the former Catholic church that’s now a concert venue as well as home to composer Mary Jane Leach.
Re:Soundings is presenting a boffo day for new music with A Festival of Firsts, a day-long extravaganza of music and multi-media including running commentary by Mary Jane Leach and Damian (of Kalvos and Damian), an art exhibition, and no less than 8 premieres. It’s all happening on Saturday, October 3, 2009, 2-9 pm, at The Brick Elephant in Valley Falls.
The Brick Elephant – a renovated small-town church that’s become a bastion of avant garde music – hosts the DownTown Ensemble performing “According to Brian” at 3pm Sunday, June 21.
The ensemble features accordionist Brian Dewan, vocalist-keyboardist Yvette Perez, vocalist William Hellermann and trombonist Peter Zummo. They will be performing music composed by the ensemble’s members as well as Kingston’s Pauline Oliveros and Valley Falls’ Mary Jane Leach.
The DownTown Ensemble was founded in 1983 by its co-directors, Daniel Goode and William Hellermann, as a response to a perceived need for repertoire customarily under-represented in today’s new music world.
The Village Voice has declared, “This intrepid group of conceptualists cuts no aesthetic corners.” Although originally formed in NYC, the group is now based in Columbiaville, Columbia County, where Hellermann lives.
