Richard Barone

Richard Barone broke into the national spotlight back in the ’80s as the lead vocalist with the Bongos. When the Bongos called it quits in 1987, Barone launched his solo career with his solo debut album Cool Blue Halo, a chamber-rock masterwork. Barone celebrated the album’s 25th anniversary with a live recording, the 3-disc Cool Blue Halo: The 25th Anniversary Concert.

Over the course of his career, he’s collaborated with everyone from Lou Reed to Pete Seeger, from Tony Visconti to Donovan.

NOTE: Richard Barone is the answer to both of of pop quizes this week. He’s the author of the memoir “Frontman: Surviving the Rock Star Myth,” which was featured as Monday’s Autobiography: From the Start, and yes, he’s also close personal friends with our own Nipper, as seen at Who Am I? on Tuesday. (The Bongos were signed to RCA Records, hence, the Nipper reference.)

Now Richard Barone is headed into Valentine’s Music Hall in Albany on Saturday night. Blue Factory is scheduled to open the show at 9pm. Advance tickets are $9.

Peter Case

From Caffe Lena to Valentine’s, singer-songwriter Peter Case has rumbled through Nippertown several times in the past couple of years, and he’s scheduled to return to the stage at Valentine’s Music Hall in Albany once again on Friday night (May 10).

The three-time Grammy nominee is a bonafide genre-smasher, equally at home playing power-pop (he led such seminal pop bands as the Nerves and the Plimsouls), folk and blues (his 2007 album Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John Estes) and rock & roll (his 2010 album Wig). No doubt about it, Case is a major talent on the contemporary Americana troubadour landscape.

He’s just wrapped up a tour in Australia, where he shared the stage with the likes of the Hoodoo Gurus, the Flamin’ Groovies, Blue Oyster Cult and the Buzzcocks. And now he’s ramblin’ into Valentine’s for a solo acoustic show. The College Farm are slated to open the show at 9pm on Friday (May 10), and advance tickets are available online, priced at $10.

BUT WAIT… there’s more. We’re giving away a pair of FREE TICKETS for the show to a lucky Nippertown reader! To enter the contest, just post a comment below. Please leave your email address, too. We won’t publish it, but we’ll use it to contact you if you win. Deadline to enter is 12noon on Friday (May 10). The winner will be selected at random and notified on Friday afternoon. Good luck! Congratulations to the winner, who has been notified by email.

When Vivian Girls leader Cassie Ramone first teamed up with Kevin Morby of Woods, it was just as a fun side-project away from their respective, rapidly rising, Brooklyn-based noise-pop bands. But it didn’t take long before they realized that the Babies – as they called themselves – were something considerably more than that.

Albany’s homegrown punk rock Americana band the Slaughterhouse Chorus is wrapping up their latest U.S. tour with a homecoming celebration at Valentine’s Music Hall on Saturday night (March 30). The No Tour for Old Men tour landed in six states between New York and Kansas over the course of just 10 days. The band was named the Capital Region’s Best Punk Band in Metroland’s Readers’ Poll earlier this month, and they have recently released a split single with Syracuse punk rockers Bridge Under Fire.

Meanwhile, the band has also teamed up with the like-minded Henry’s Rifle to launch the Built4BBQ record collective. The label has already released the first of three compilation albums planned for 2013, The Appetizer. The sampler album features 18 tracks from Charmboy, the Pistolwhips, Brooklyn’s the End Men, Bridge Under Fire, Maggot Brain and Linear North, as well as numerous special guests representing the best in independent music from across NYS. The Appetizer is currently available for free download in a variety of formats.

At Valentine’s on Saturday, the Slaughterhouse Chorus will be joined by their tourmates the End Men, as well as rapidly rising California garage-popsters Warm Soda (in support of their debut album Someone For You on Castle Face Records) and Local 518 faves Party Boat and the Jack Russell Terrorists. Doors open at 7:30pm on Saturday. Admission is $5.
