Be Here Now: UAG’s Black and White Gala

The UAG Black and White Gala @ The Normanside Country Club

A year ago, the Upstate Artists Guild was facing bankruptcy and eviction from its storefront gallery at 247 Lark Street but, through a series of fundraisers, pulled itself up by its bootstraps and managed to keep the doors open.

“The Upstate Artists Guild is a not-for-profit volunteer organization, open to all, which promotes the appreciation, practice, and enjoyment of art.” the organization states on its website. “Our mission is to promote art education and artistic endeavors throughout the community; to maintain a space in which to meet for the purpose of exhibitions, lectures, and instruction; and to work with the community to stimulate an interest in the arts.”

The bootstrap pulling continues this Saturday, February 23, when the Guild presents its second annual fundraising gala from 5-10pm at the Normanside Country Club in Delmar. It sounds like a rockin’ good time: the theme for this year’s bash is Black and White and they’re promising a night of art, music, food and fun featuring a silent auction of works by local art groups and artists and performances by The Sharks, William Hale, Second Hand Roses, DJ OFI, DJ Rana Ransom, comedian William Hughes and poet Dan Wilcox. The Champagne Preview portion of the evening will feature a “Buy it Now” option for the auction items and exclusive entertainment. Tickets range from $35 to $100.

One of the many problems hands-free cell phone technology has caused is you’re not sure if a crazy/angry person is just trying to talk to someone over a bad connection. So as I huddled with poet/peace activist Dan Wilcox and several other souls inside the entranceway to the building that houses Upstate Artists Guild, I didn’t know the short-haired, middle-aged, bespectacled, yelling guy storming up the other side of Lark Street was actually pissed about something until he stopped and started yelling at us!

“SHUT THAT FUCKING PLACE DOWN,” he bellowed, shaking his fist at us from behind a parked car. “THEY CAN’T CENSOR ME! HAVE YOU SEEN THAT SHIT? THAT’S NOT ART! I’M A PROFESSIONAL ILLUSTRATOR…” The man had much more to say, but he started walking up the street again, so we missed the rest of his rant.

What’s that ringing in my ear?

The Albany Sonic Arts Collective’s 2011 season kicked off with the aptly titled “Deep Freeze: Experimental Music for Snowy Times,” last Saturday at the Upstate Artists Guild in Albany. The event was well attended – not a folding plastic chair to spare, despite the lack of video backdrop.

First up was the guitar-wielding duo Mark Lunt and Chris Bassett – collectively know as Insect Posse – who coxed tone and feedback from their instruments including their feet with great effect. Self described as “purveyors of noisy yet hypnotic hymns to other worlds of nothingness.”

NAME: Holland Hopson
INSTRUMENT: banjo, soprano saxophone, electronics

1. THE FIRST ALBUM I EVER BOUGHT WAS … I remember co-opting certain records from my parents’ collection – the “Star Wars” soundtrack was likely the first. Then a friend gave me Def Leppard’s “Pyromania” for my birthday, and I realized it might be fun to have my own records. So the first one I bought was Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” via mail order from J&R. The first CDs I bought were Kronos Quartet’s “Winter Was Hard” and Hugo Largo’s “Mettle.”

ArtBeat: “Art-Hypnosis Hypnosis-Art” @ Upstate Artists Guild

Friday, November 5th, 2010

As part of tonight’s First Friday arts walk from 5-9pm, Upstate Artists Guild will host “Art-Hypnosis Hypnosis-Art,” a new way of conditioning yourself in an art gallery setting.

“My goal is to allow viewers to gain confidence and personal insights using artwork to focus attention,” explains certified hypnotist George Guarino, who has installed three Art-Hypnosis works at UAG, “and to explore the relationship between the viewer, the gallery space and the use of a piece of art as a focal point for self-confidence and insight. My canvas is the space between the viewer and the piece of art.

“I intend to produce works that suggest and condition the viewer to go inside themselves through art and find their own ability to use this experience for future discovery and growth.”

Guarino – who longtime Nippertown music fans will remember as the producer of the cable television shows “Real George’s Backroom” and “Sarge Blotto’s Hotseat,” as well as the editor and publisher of “Buzzz” magazine – runs Hypnosis Works Well with offices in Clifton Park and Delmar. He will be on hand from 5-9pm tonight for the opening reception of the exhibit. Admission is free.

The exhibit will remain on view through Friday, November 26.
