Like just about every other arts organization around town, the Upstate Artists Guild has been facing some pretty serious financial hardships lately.

But the not-for-profit, primarily volunteer-run group that has operated its art gallery on Albany’s Lark Street for the past six years, has been digging in against the economic tide and pulling itself up by its bootstraps with a number of DIY benefit events in recent weeks.

Still, it seemed unlikely that the funky storefront arts group would get all swanky, but that’s exactly the direction UAG took by throwing their biggest fundraiser to date, the Back in the Black Gala, late last month at the Normanside Country Club in Delmar. And while black and white attire was the recommended color scheme, the event turned out to be a wonderful and wildly democratic fashion statement with supporters in attendance sporting everything from tuxedos to t-shirts, from ball gowns to baseball caps.

Upcoming exhibitions scheduled to take place at the Upstate Artists Guild in Albany include “Occupy UAG” in January and “Call of the Wild” in February, but as it turns out, those shows might never get the call.

The six-year-old, volunteer-operated, storefront gallery at 247 Lark Street is four months overdue in paying its $1,200-a-month rent, and the landlord notified UAG last week that legal action had been set in motion. The nonprofit art gallery is facing possible eviction at the end of December. The gallery is also behind in its other bills.

“The Upstate Artists Guild is a not-for-profit community arts organization fueled entirely by donated time and money – a collaboration of hard-working and single-minded volunteers,” the organization states on its website. “We have become known as a center for arts in Albany and a unifying force among the wealth of Upstate New York’s arts. We now reach out to the community for support to keep us here on Lark Street and ensure continued growth and support for your local arts.”

The Albany Sonic Arts Collective has been teaming up with venerable mainstream arts organizations recently, like Proctors (last month’s Faust concert) and the Arts Center of the Capital Region (last week’s Communal Drone Night), but they’re getting back to their underground roots again with their next show on Saturday (October 24) at the Upstate Artists Guild in Albany.

Headlining is the Ben Miller/Matt Weston Duo. Formerly a member of Michigan’s legendary Destroy All Monsters (and brother of Mission of Burma’s Roger Miller), Miller plays sax, guitar and analog electronics, while Albany’s own Weston tackles the percussion chores.

Also on the bill on Saturday is the bass-and-guitar tandem of the Andy Crespo/Jefferson Pitcher Duo, multi-instrumentalist Sam Sowydra and Cruudeuces (the solo project of Nathaniel Brennan).

Be Here Now: Comic Book Constrictor @ UAG

May 10th, 2009, 6:47 pm by Greg

We here at headquarters are always thrilled when art and music are involved in a head-on collision. So I’m pretty damned sure that it was no mere coincidence that I picked up an intriguing postcard for Comic Book Constrictor – a workshop-talk regarding “dangerous methods of sequential art” – that Ira Marcks is offering at the Upstate Artists Guild in Albany at 2pm Saturday, May 16.

Because just a couple of days later, I get a lovely little note from Ira – and, of course, we love to get mail – explaining that he and his folk-rock band Restys are splitting the bill with the oh-so-lovely Katie Haverly at the Bread and Jam Cafe in Cohoes at 8pm Friday, May 22. Admission is free, but naturally donations to the musicians are always greatly appreciated. (Unfortunately, that’s the same night that Geoff Muldaur is at Caffe Lena. Darn.)

Marcks’ Comic Book Constrictor talk is free, too. Apparently, Marcks is in the process of developing some workshops in experimental narrative and sequential art for the Arts Center of the Capital Region in Troy for the autumn. “This lecture is sort of a warm-up to help me develop my ideas for those classes,” says Marcks.
