CD: Tom McWatters’ “A Beast Among the Civilized”

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

Tom McWatters: A Beast Among the Civilized (The Rev Records, 2010):

Known for his cuttingly ribald lyrics and his no-holds-barred take on rock and roll, Tom McWatters has upped the ante with a stunning collection of exceedingly well-written rockers, ballads and classic pop tunes on “A Beast Among the Civilized”, his second release as a solo artist.

Backed by some of the very best local musicians going – Bob Buckley of the Kamikaze Hearts on bass and piano; Charmboy’s Eric Halder on lead guitar; and man about town Steve Candlen on the Bonham-esque backbeats – McWatters has never sounded better as a vocalist, the Seger/Springsteen bellow of his Sense Offender days maturing into a more versatile and expressive instrument that sees him as possibly the area’s reigning king of blue-eyed soul, now that Sean Rowe has signed to Anti-.

Well, you couldn’t have asked for a better day in Albany, although the hot sun and soaring temperatures made it feel more like the Fourth of July instead of mid-September.

We didn’t catch all of the music – with two stages running simultaneously all day long – it was nearly impossible, especially after 2:30pm when the rapidly growing crowd made the stage-to-stage dash difficult, to say the least.

Taking full advantage of the crowds expected to fill Lark Street in Albany on Saturday for the 29th annual LarkFEST, singer-songwriter-rocker Tom McWatters has decided that his performance will be a celebration for the release of a brand-new album, “A Beast Among the Civilized.”

The nine-song album will officially be released by The Rev Records on Saturday, but you can purchase the digital download now right here. It’s the follow-up to his debut solo album, “atomicwaters,” which was released last year.

LarkFEST takes place from 10am-5:30pm on Saturday. There are two stages – one at the Madison Avenue end of the street and one at the Washington Avenue end, both featuring live music all day long. Tom McWatters & the Philo Beddoe Band will be performing at 11am Saturday on the Madison Avenue stage. Admission is, of course, free.
