It’s not every day that you get to see a grown man on stage playing a typewriter behind his head like Jimi Hendrix wielding a Stratocaster at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. At least the former refrained from igniting his instrument, perhaps recognizing that the Albany police station was adjacent to the Steamer No. 10 Theatre.

It’s hard to believe that the Star Spangled Washboard Band had not played a show in 15 years – even the band members themselves made reference throughout the night to that swift, odd passage of time, sometimes with dated jokes that were nonetheless funny. What was obvious as well, seriously, was that their repetoire of songs had vintage quality right from the start.

Before Blotto was Blotto, its key members (including Broadway, Bowtie and Sarge) made music together as the Star Spangled Washboard Band – unleashing a wild, woolly amalgam of obscure jug band nuggets, off-the-wall, stream-of-consciousness humor, tight vocal harmonies and staggering instrumental technique (“staggering,” in all its various meanings) as evidenced by the band’s 1976 debut album on Flying Fish Records, “A Collector’s Item,” which, after all these years has finally lived up to its title.

Over the course of the past two decades, the Steamer No. 10 Theatre has become one of Albany’s prime destinations for children’s entertainment. But every once in a while the intimate little theater plays host to some fine grown-up entertainment, too.

In celebration of the theater’s 20th anniversary, guest producer Michael Eck is presenting a new Electic Performance Series at the theater, a slate of six exciting evening concerts aimed at adult audiences and featuring some of the area’s finest musicians both past and present. Among the upcoming performers are Hamell on Trial, Sean Rowe, the Star Spangled Washboard Band, Val Haynes & Todd Nelson, Rosanne Raneri, Bryan Thomas, Rosary Beard, Winterpills and Frank Jaklitsch.
