With a Little Help From My Fwends

On Tuesday (October 28), the Flaming Lips are releasing their Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band tribute album. It’s titled With a Little Help From My Fwends, and oh what a bunch of fwends are helping them out, including the Local 518’s own Phantogram.

You can listen to the album now at NPR’s First Listen

Proceeds from the benefit album will go to the Bella Foundation, an Oklahoma City nonprofit organization that aids low-income, elderly and terminally ill pet owners with their veterinary bills.

The Lips themselves appear on six of the songs (including classics like “With a Little Help From My Friends,” “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” and “A Day in the Life”) and the Lips’ new side-project, Electric Wurms, perform “Fixing a Hole.”

A delightfully diverse array of special guest artists are featured on the album, including J. Mascis, My Morning Jacket, Tegan & Sara, Foxygen, Dr. Dog and, yes, Miley Cyrus, who sings on two tracks.

Meanwhile, Phantogram teams up with Julianna Barwick and Spaceface to contribute their ethereal electro-pop waltz rendition of “She’s Leaving Home.”

Here’s the complete track listing for With a Little Help From My Fwends:

Yes, it’s the official video for the Flaming Lips / Phantogram collaboration, “You Lust.” The seriously psychedelic track runs in excess of 13 minutes on the Lips’ new album The Terror, but the band has apparently edited it down to four minutes for the video, which features the Lips’ Wayne Coyne, Phantogram’s Sarah Barthel, a gaggle of girls, a frog, a monkey, futuristic sci-fi experiments and lots of nudity.

“You Lust”: The Flaming Lips Meet Phantogram

Yeah, that’s Phantogram’s Sarah Barthel singing with Wayne Coyne at last month’s South by Southwest fest in Austin…

The new even-trippier-than-usual Flaming Lips album The Terror features the long-awaited collaboration with Nippertown’s own Phantogram. That’s right, Saratoga Springs’ fave electro-pop duo shares songwriting credit on the dark and oh-so-sprawling track “You Lust,” an ominous slab of bad-trip psychedelia that’s the centerpiece of the Lips’ new album.

One thing’s for sure, though. It ain’t pretty…

Phantogram has been on quite an impressive roll lately, and it looks like they’re about to take it up a couple of notches with their latest endeavor – collaborating with the Flaming Lips.

Saratoga’s fave electro-pop couple spent last New Year’s Eve in Oklahoma City, sharing the stage with Wayne Coyne & Co. at the Lips’ annual New Year’s Freak Out bash. And obviously Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter made quite an impression…

The Lips’ new album – the double-vinyl “The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends,” slated for release on Saturday, April 21 (Record Store Day) – is apparently chockful of collaborations (Ke$ha? Coldplay? Bon Iver?), although the full list of musical partners has yet to be officially revealed.

But according to an interview with Coyne on Pitchfork, the collaboration with Phantogram is a shoe-in to make it onto the album.

In the interview, Coyne describes the collaboration, “It’s a real fuckin’ somber, strange song about lusting for success and the things that you want in your life.”
