Glenn Mercer and Stan Demeski

There’s this stereotype of music nerds that we horde away our favorite music, arrogantly holding the knowledge of secret unknown bands over the unenlightened, the ignorant, the square. I’ll confess to the fact that I probably am a rock snob, but I’m not a selfish snob. One of my great joys is sharing the music I love with as many people as possible. And while the art of the mix tape may be beyond its half-life here in 2015, introducing my friends to a fantastic live band like the Feelies is always an exercise in altruistic pleasure.

This time, my old college roommates met me at the BSP Lounge in Kingston, driving up from Brooklyn for the sold-out show. Neither of them had heard of the Feelies, and when they asked me what to expect, I simply told them to trust me — it would be the best $20 show they would see all year.

They looked at me cross-eyed when the band took the stage. There was lead guitarist Glenn Mercer with his long skinny face and Dylan shades; rhythm guitarist Bill Million in his pleated khakis; bassist Brenda Sauter with her muted “thank you” at the microphone; and percussionists Stanley Demeski and Dave Weckerman, looking more like they were heading to the university chemistry lab than the stage. It was hard for my buddies to figure out what they were in for. They started downing the $3 PBR cans at an alarming rate. I’d dragged these guys to some pretty strange scenes before, nights where I take in strange avant-garde sounds while they awkwardly count minutes until the after-party and self-medicate until they get there.

The Feelies

The Feelies

Review and photographs by Kirsten Ferguson

When the Feelies started playing at Club Helsinki — the follow-up to their show at the Hudson hotspot last year — they looked out into a full audience of diners seated quietly at tables quite a distance from the stage. That gulf must have been unnerving to the band, because halfway through their first set — around the time they lit into a passionate cover of Neil Young’s “Barstool Blues” — a staff member of the club rousted fans standing along the wall of the room and told us the band wanted people in front of the stage.

The Feelies

There were two things the young women serving drinks behind the Hunter Center’s makeshift bar had never seen: a member of a band come over post-performance and buy beer to bring backstage (it was bespectacled Feelies drummer Stanley Demeski ordering Berkshire Beer Company porter and stout).

And they had never seen a band come back onstage three times at the end of the show, as the Feelies did during a series of covers-filled encores that found them paying tribute to their friends in the recently retired R.E.M. with a forceful version of “Carnival of Sorts (Box Car)” from 1982’s Chronic Town – an EP no doubt influenced by the Feelies in the first place.

The Feelies Never-Ending Reunion Tour Reaches MASS MoCA on Nov. 11 With Minimalist Indie Rock [Berkshire on Stage]

The Feelies

It’s time for a little indie rock history as the Feelies Reunion Tour reaches Mass MoCA on Friday, November 11 at 8 pm. (The show scheduled for Nov. 12 at the Helsinki in Hudson has been cancelled.) It’s a rare performance by a rare band. This is the reunion that began in Hoboken (see photo above) and has been going on for years much to every fan’s delight, but appearances are still not that frequent.

You can take part in this bit of indie rock history when the band hits MASS MoCA’s Hunter Center on Friday, November 11 (11/11/11 is a date that is hard to forget), at 8:00 pm in the Hunter Center.

CANCELLED: The Feelies @ Club Helsinki, 11/12/11

Thursday, October 13th, 2011

Still more bad news…

The hotly anticipated concert by the Feelies – originally scheduled to take place at Club Helsinki in Hudson on Saturday, November 12 – has been cancelled. No reason for the cancellation has been announced.

According to a post that went up last night on the band’s Facebook page: “Unfortunately, the show at Club Helsinki on November 12 has been canceled, but we look forward to playing there in the future.”

Apparently the Feelies concert at MASS MoCA’s Hunter Center – slated for Friday, November 11 – is still scheduled to take place as planned.

The demise of the Feelies’ Hudson show marks the fourth Nippertown concert cancellation of the week. Other shows cancelled earlier this week include:

Tommy Malone @ The Egg, Albany on Saturday
Hanson @ Northern Lights, Clifton Park last night
Chris Tucker @ the Palace Theatre, Albany on Sunday
