Jam sessions…

Often these are behind-closed-door sessions that are played strictly for fun – or the musicians’ own amusement – in the late, late evening/early morning times in after-hours lofts and bars.

But that’s not necessarily so in the Hudson Valley.

Tony Falco, the owner of The Falcon in Marlboro has recently renovated the basement of his building, and it’s now open as a separate performance space. Eventually, it will also become a beer garden featuring New York State craft brews and spirits known as the Falcon Underground.

On this occasion, the jam session started early – even before the sun went down. Children were welcome and well represented in the audience. Falco introduced the musicians who were the core of the session – Adam Nussbaum on drums, Ira Coleman on bass and Aaron Goldberg on piano, all first-call musicians on the NYC jazz scene.

Before the set started, Nussbaum asked, “Have we played together all at once before?” Nobody seemed to remember, but it didn’t seem to matter. Standards – such as “Body and Soul,” “I Mean You,” “All Blues” – were performed as though the trio had been playing together for years. Heck, they interacted as if they could read each others thoughts.

LIVE: The Ed Palermo Big Band @ the Falcon, 8/1/15

If you attend one of the Ed Palermo Big Band’s shows – this was my fourth – you musically expect the unexpected. Mash-ups and medleys of seemingly unrelated tunes concocted together into a bubbling spicy stew by conductor-arranger Palermo.

The big band’s latest gig at The Falcon in Marlboro was not only a non-stop audio extravaganza, but also a visual spectacle when Palermo & Co. paid tribute to the Beach Boys.

Wearing a 19th century men’s bathing suit, a safari helmet and a life ring, Palermo was a little less frenetic (although not much) conducting his virtuoso ensemble through another death-defying adventure in chart reading.

He was generally barefoot and standing in a small sandbox to better put himself, the band and in the audience in touch with the true spirit and inspiration of Beach Boys’ mastermind Brian Wilson.

Last week, drummer Allison Miller’s band Boom Tic Boom, played an utterly fascinating set of originals at the Falcon in Marlboro.

The group composed of virtuosos – Jenny Scheinman on violin, Carmen Staaf on piano and Todd Sickafoose on bass – entertained the audience with playful interplay of what could be called “chamber jazz.”

They were an odd couple…

The crystal clear conservatory trained voice of Heather Masse paired with the growling trombone of Roswell Rudd made for unique yet exceptionally musical twin leads at a recent performance at the Falcon in Marlboro.

It was a family affair at the Falcon in Marlboro as well-known jazz vocalist Judi Silvano celebrated the release of her new CD, My Dance, a sparkling collaboration with pianist-composer-arranger Michael Abene.

And Silvano shared the stage with her husband Joe Lovano’s trio Fascination, featuring Hudson Valley stalwart Doug Weiss on bass and Cleveland-based Carmen Castaldi on drums, in addition to Lovano’s volcanic sax playing.

Billed as a “Roots Rock Gumbo of All-Star Musicians Playing Their Out-of-the-Coop One-Stop Reunion Tour,” Blue Chicken showed what rock and roll is all about – just plain fun.

This band is one of many projects that former Band guitarist Jim Weider is involved in. Onstage at the Falcon in Marlboro, he shared the stage with journeyman guitarist Sid McGinnis (best known as the guitarist on “The Late Show With David Letterman.” They represented a true contrast in styles both in playing and stage presence. Weider preferring to just stand and play complex leads and slide work. He let his guitar speak for him. In contrast, McGinnis played snarling lines and power chords to his bandmates, also adding plenty of visual drama to the performance.

Ace guitarist Peter Bernstein and his all-star trio – featuring Doug Weiss on bass and Billy Drummond on drums – were joined by special guest virtuoso pianist Brad Mehldau earlier this month as they explored two sets of jazz standards, contemporary songs and originals before a packed audience at the Falcon in Marlboro.
