NEWS FLASH: Tess Collins of Lark Tavern Is Headed to McGeary’s

August 7th, 2010, 12:41 am by Greg

It seems as though the embers were barely cool on the fire that devastated Tess’ Lark Tavern, back in the early morning hours of May 6, when friends and family – pretty much one and the same when you’re talking about a beloved gathering place like Tess’ – began to wonder what might be next.

Then in early June, landlord Mike DiNapoli – the owner of the Delmar-based DiNapoli Opticians who also owns the historic building that housed the Lark Tavern – filed papers declaring the building a total loss, which would legally terminate the Lark Tavern’s lease.

And so, the rumor mill has been a-buzz ever since.

Real Good for Free: Jim Gaudet & the Railroad Boys @ Tess’ Lark Tavern, 9/14/09

September 14th, 2009, 9:18 am by Greg

Mixing up some hot picking with some high lonesome harmonies and the wry, dry wit of Jim Gaudet‘s superb songsmithing, the Railroad Boys will be riding into Tess’ Lark Tavern in Albany for a fab free show about 7:30pm tonight.

Yes, we know that Gaudet and the boys have become mainstays on Tess’ schedule for the first Monday night of each month, but because of last week’s Labor Day holiday, they decided to push back their performance a week. So catch ’em tonight.

All other regular Monday night gigs at Tess’ (like Ramblin Jug Stompers on Monday, September 21) will continue on in their usual time slot, and next month Gaudet will be back to the first Monday.

Got it?

Be Here Now: Beer Helmet Night @ Tess’ Lark Tavern, 9/5/09

September 2nd, 2009, 10:33 am by Greg

Educated Consumers

Educated Consumers

Yes, it’s beer helmet night at Tess’ Lark Tavern in Albany on Saturday, September 5. It’s the Albany stop on the “Hello Big Mama” tour, in support of the brand spankin new album from Educated Consumers. And, oh yeah, it’s also the release party for Dood Computer’s new album, “Penny Dreadfuls.”

The Dood and Educated Consumers will be joined by an all-star cast of hip-hop characters including Dezmatic, Neighborhood Creeps, Alaska & Kojo, Prolyphic and Cubbiebear. Cardboard City’s Benn Grim hosts the bash with DJ Turnstyle spinning yer fave Neil Diamond tunes. (Do I look like I’m kidding?)

Has “Penny Dreadfuls” evolved beyond cassette status yet? We’ll have to wait and see.

But at least it’s beer helmet night, and as the flier proudly proclaims, “Bring your own or buy one of ours, and you can buy shitty cans of beer for one dollar.”

Now that’s what I call marketing…

Real Good for Free: Big Soul Ensemble @ Tess’ Lark Tavern

July 27th, 2009, 10:07 am by Greg

It’s no secret that Tess’ Lark Tavern is a prime destination. Metroland just named it Albany’s best bar – and we here at Nippertown certainly second that decision.

One reason is the Big Soul Ensemble. Led by saxmaster Keith Pray, this aptly named combo has a monthly residency there on the first Tuesday of month. And this is no ordinary night of entertainment. It’s an exceedingly rare opportunity to see and hear some of the area’s very best jazz musicians joining forces in a roof-raising celebration of big-band music – both vintage and contemporary – that will definitely feed your soul.

That’s right – big band music. And they don’t skimp, either. When they say big band, they mean 17 pieces. Count ’em – 17.

And it’s free! Great Googly Moogly, what more could you ask for?

Anyway, for the past several months, BSE has been recording their shows in the hopes of compiling a live album. In order to speed the process up a bit, the band will be rolling into the Lark Tavern on four consecutive Tuesdays between July 28 and August 18. All shows begin at 9pm.

This is awesome stuff! And while admission is free, donations will be accepted – and greatly appreciated.
