Real Good for Free: The Tang Museum @ Skidmore College

May 16th, 2011, 4:05 pm by Greg

The UpBeat on the Roof concert series returns to the Skidmore College campus in Saratoga Springs once again this summer. And there’s plenty of truth-in-advertising in the series’ title – the free, outdoor concerts actually take place on the roof of Skidmore’s Tang Museum. In case of inclement weather, the performance will move indoors to the museum.

The concerts take place at 7pm on Fridays, showcasing a wide variety of musical styles from jazz to bluegrass, from rockabilly to folk.

Here’s the schedule of bands for the 2011 summer season:

Scientific Maps
Seeing and hearing the Scientific Maps at The Tang in a duo context (their drummer and bassist couldn’t make it) on Friday night was quite an interesting experience.

Well, think about it… there’s only trumpet-playing back-up vocalist Donna Baird and electric hollow-body guitarist-singer Aaron Smith. That’s it.

LIVE: Jill Hughes @ the Tang Museum, 7/24

July 28th, 2009, 4:24 pm by Greg

Veteran jazz-soul singer Jill Hughes debuted the material from her new upcoming album at Skidmore College’s Tang Museum on Friday, July 24, as part of the ongoing “Upbeat On The Roof” free summer concert series.

Bandleader Jon Working was at the piano, while tenor saxophonist Eric Walentowicz, trumpeter Peter Bellino, drummer Greg Cortelyou and bassist Steve Rust rounded out the line-up.

Hughes’ solo album, “For the First Time,” is slated for release sometime within the next two months. Produced by Working, the album features a dozen tunes – including one sung in Portugese and eight originals.

Meanwhile, Hughes will be the headline performer at the Southern Vermont Art and Craft Festival in Hildene’s Meadow in Manchester, Vermont on Saturday, August 1.
