Bob Irwin, the head honcho of Coxsackie’s fab Sundazed Music record label, spends most of his time down in Nashville these days, playing guitar in the Martian Denny Orchestra with such fellow Nippertown ex-pats as guitarslinger Eddie Angel and jack-of-all-instruments Jim Hoke.

Maya Lin: Storm King Wavefield

If the sunshine outside your window doesn’t make it clear enough that spring has sprung, how about this? The Storm King Art Center in Mountainville opened for the 2010 season this morning.

Not only that, but this is the 50th anniversary season for the fabulous, sprawling, outdoor sculpture park that showcases the work of Andy Goldsworthy, David Smith, Maya Lin, Alexander Calder, Louise Nevelson and dozens of other great artists.

We had a mindbogglingly good time there last summer, and we can’t wait to go back.

Happy 50th, Storm King!

Take the day off from work tomorrow and celebrate the the relationship between art and nature.

The Storm King Art Center in Mountainville is an amazing outdoor sculpture garden that stretches on and on for 500 acres. It’s pretty much impossible to see everything in just one day of walking around the grounds – although there are regularly scheduled tram tours if you want to give your legs a bit of a rest.

New this summer is Maya Lin’s massive, rolling “Storm King Wavefield,” a mesmerizing earthwork.

If you haven’t been to Storm King yet this summer, tomorrow (Thursday, August 27) is a great day to go for a visit – admission is free all day long. One day only. Bring a picnic and make a day of it.
