“We’re Babe City, but he’s like Babe USA,” joked Olivia Quillio onstage when her all-female supergroup Babe City opened up for songwriter/heartthrob Sean Rowe at Steamer No. 10 Theatre.

“Babe International” would even apply to Rowe these days, as the Troy native has been around the world and back since signing to Anti- Records, a label he shares with musical heavyweights like Merle Haggard, Tom Waits and Bettye LaVette.

The Star Spangled Washboard Band

It’s not every day that you get to see a grown man on stage playing a typewriter behind his head like Jimi Hendrix wielding a Stratocaster at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. At least the former refrained from igniting his instrument, perhaps recognizing that the Albany police station was adjacent to the Steamer No. 10 Theatre.

It’s hard to believe that the Star Spangled Washboard Band had not played a show in 15 years – even the band members themselves made reference throughout the night to that swift, odd passage of time, sometimes with dated jokes that were nonetheless funny. What was obvious as well, seriously, was that their repetoire of songs had vintage quality right from the start.

Before Blotto was Blotto, its key members (including Broadway, Bowtie and Sarge) made music together as the Star Spangled Washboard Band – unleashing a wild, woolly amalgam of obscure jug band nuggets, off-the-wall, stream-of-consciousness humor, tight vocal harmonies and staggering instrumental technique (“staggering,” in all its various meanings) as evidenced by the band’s 1976 debut album on Flying Fish Records, “A Collector’s Item,” which, after all these years has finally lived up to its title.

 Hamell On Trial @ Steamer 10, 2/25/12

Review by Fred Rudofsky

Part retrospective, part preview of an upcoming album and concept show, Hamell on Trial’s performance at the Steamer No. 10 Theatre in Albany was one for the ages. A small but fervent crowd of music fans came in from the cold and got to see one of the best, most prolific songwriters in America up close and personal.

After an introduction by Michael Eck, Hamell dressed in black strode out onto the stage, plugged in his vintage Gibson acoustic and gave a prologue for the night about how his years in Syracuse as a working musician and bartender in an infamous venue had brought him face to face with “the disenfranchised.” Many of the songs during the evening delved into how the other half lives, with Hamell virtually channeling Jacob Riis, Woody Guthrie, Joe Strummer and James Ellroy in a torrent of vivid, heartrending and sometimes unsettling (and often quite funny) lyrics. In between the songs were jokes and stories ranging from corny to wry to obscene – in other words, it was like entering a spectacular microcosm where irreverence topples all pretense and conventional wisdom. Even Hamell himself stepped off microphone to ask the rapt audience late in the second set, “Is any of this linear?”
