John Pizzarelli, What Was The First Album You Ever Bought?

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

JohnPizzarelli“Actually, for some reason, the first one that comes to mind is ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.’ I don’t know why, but that really seems like one of the first ones.

If it wasn’t that, it was probably a Bill Cosby record, believe it or not. I really liked the first three Bill Cosby albums – ‘Why Is There Air?,’ ‘I Started Out as a Child’ and one other one. I just had to learn all of those. And then there was George Carlin.

But I think it was ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ when I actually remember saying, ‘We’ve got to get this record.’ But my sisters usually bought all of the records, so I just kind of glommed off of them.”

Singer-guitarist-radio host John Pizzarelli steps into the spotlight at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington, Mass. at 8pm on Friday (December 18). He’ll be accompanied by his bassist/brother Martin Pizzarelli, drummer Tony Tedesco and pianist Larry Fuller.

Pizzarelli is also slated to drop by and step up to the microphone at the teeny, tiny studios of WBCR-LP to chat live on the air with “The Splatto Festival” host Paul Rapp during the show’s “bad Christmas music” special, “X-Mas From Hell ’09, Part II,” broadcast from 3-5pm on Friday. This ought to be good. In Great Barrington, you can listen live at 97.7 FM, or you can get a live stream on your computer at Donations are greatly appreciated, of course.

Bad Christmas Songs

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

There’s simply no shortage of ’em, is there?

I was going to post one a day of those truly awful, almost unlistenable or dreadfully bizarre Christmas songs. But you see, someone here at just doesn’t like Christmas songs at all. Not the good ones. And certainly not the bad ones.

So rather than trying to post stuff that’s going to ruin someone else’s holiday season (and put me in the doghouse for the rest of the year), let me just point you toward “The Splatto Festival” on WBCR-LP in Great Barrington, Mass., which has done my dirty work for me. Hosted by the ever-popular Paul Rapp, “The Splatto Festival” is broadcast on WBCR-LP from 3-5pm Fridays.

Check out the playlist, and then download the whole thing for free. Of course, if you want to make a donation to the not-for-profit radio station while you’re at it, that would be a nice thing to do. And don’t forget that someone is checking to see whether you’re being naughty or nice…

By the way, bad Christmas music continues on “The Splatto Festival” from 3-5pm Friday (December 18), as Rapp and his crew team up with special guest John Pizzarelli for “Xmas From Hell ’09, Part II.” Let’s hope this time they finally play Mike Love’s “Santa’s Going to Kokomo”…
