Soon to be the lips of millions, the new television series Smash is about to change America’s perception of live theatre. It’s going to do more to develop new and younger audiences than even High School Musical or Glee. In fact, this is Glee for grownups.

The first pilot episode airs on NBC on February 6. Produced by Steven Spielberg, it is written by Theresa Rebeck and has a great cast. Rebeck is one of theatre’s best new playwrights who has been lured away from the stage to write the script. But since it’s for a useful purpose, making the theatre come alive for television watchers, she may deserve a special Tony for her perspicacity.

Smash is the behind-the-scenes story of a Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. The New York-centric show plays out from both the standpoint of the creative team (with Debra Messing as the songwriter and Angelica Huston as the producer) and the actresses vying for the coveted lead (Broadway’s Megan Hilty and American Idol finalist Katharine McPhee).
