Although the Roots Music Festival actually began back in 2007 as a two-day, 14-band affair downtown at Red Square, organizer Ryan Dunham and his his band Red Haired Strangers consolidated it into a single evening and moved the bash uptown to WAMC-FM’s The Linda for the first time in 2010. It was a perfect fit.

So the fest returned to The Linda again for the fifth time earlier this month, with an array of Local 518 favorites and a headlining set from the Wiyos, led by the multi-talented Michael Farkas. And proceeds from the festivities went to help feed inner city kids in Albany.

Roots Music Fest 2

The Roots Music Festival takes over The Linda in Albany on Saturday evening, making it a perfect post-LarkFest destination for folks looking for a night of acoustic music.

Although the fest began back in 2007 as a two-day, 14-band affair downtown at Red Square, last year organizer Ryan Dunham and his his band Red Haired Strangers consolidated it into a single evening and moved the bash uptown to The Linda. It was a perfect fit. (Read our review here.)

So for the second year, the festival is making its home at The Linda, hence the official name of the fest – The Roots Music Festival #2. And once again, the bash is a benefit with all proceeds from the festivities going to the J.C. Club to help feed inner city kids in Albany.

The music gets underway at 7pm on Saturday, and admission is $15. Good music, good cause, good times…

Here’s the list of performers who are donating their time and talents:

After a couple of years at Red Square – where the attendance was sparse to say the least – the annual Roots Music Festival moved uptown to The Linda, and the new home was a perfect fit.

Emceed by Chris Wienk of WEXT-FM, it was a splendid night – four and a half hours of non-stop music, all for a good cause. The fest was a benefit concert for the JC Club, which provides lunches for hungry inner-city kids in Albany.

The Blackwell Sinners – a family quartet led by siblings Chris and Courtney Blackwell – kicked off the evening with some back-porch country tunes, and by the time the very pregnant Courtney leaned into the microphone to sing the ballad, “Please Say Hello,” there was already a couple waltzing around the back of the theater.

CD: Red Haired Strangers’ “Hilltown Sessions”

This is beautiful, old-school country stuff. Real back-porch country stuff; not contemporary radio “country” music.

Oh, sure there’s drums (courtesy Chris Scharl), but just enough to keep pushing the songs along and never so much that they get in the way.

Mostly, it’s a delightful balance of Joe Gumpper’s fiddle, John Rice’s guitar and Ryan Dunham’s harmonica, laced with some pedal steel (and dobro) from veteran Rick Morse. Rob McCuen jumps in to spice things up a bit on banjo and mandolin on a couple of tunes, and the band enlisted Courtney Blackwell on harmony vocals for Dunham’s honky-tonker, “Heartbreak Moonlight.”
