How do you make a Good Friday even better? Throw Robert Randolph & His Family Band onstage and let ’em cut loose with their rip-roaring melange of blues, rock, funk and gospel. If you were at Saratoga Springs’ Putnam Den, well then, you know what I mean.

Steel guitar master Randolph and his funky crew are no strangers to Greater Nippertown, having played a wide variety of Local 518 venues big and small since the days of ye olde Saratoga Winners. And they never disappoint.

The fabulous summer weather makes for a perfect time for a road trip, especially when there’s a big batch of hellacious rock ‘n’ roll and R&B at the other end of the journey.

Nippertown photographer Timothy Reidy jumped in his car and headed west on Friday, August 5, and he ended up at Saranac Brewery in Utica, where he caught a wailin’ show by steel guitar master Robert Randolph & the Family Band with Gary Clark opening the show.

The combined grace, hellfire, innovation and soul of Jimi Hendrix remains unmatched to this day – more than 40 years after his death. His six-string mastery has influenced every guitarist on the planet who has ever plugged into an amplifier.

So as you would expect with any tribute concert to Hendrix, there was a whole lotta guitar wanking going on at the Palace Theatre in Albany last Saturday night.

A whole lot.
