Veteran heartland rock machines REO Speedwagon and Chicago have both been pumping it out for years, rolling into town in one combination or another (with the Doobies Brothers, Styx, Earth, Wind & Fire, Ted Nugent, etc.) for co-headlining shows.

At the Saratoga Performing Arts Center recently each band took the stage and ran through as many of their hits that they could cram into their set. You know the songs.

Review and photographs by Andrzej Pilarczyk

Virtuoso acoustic guitarists Loren Barrigar & Mark Mazengarb initially met and jammed together in a Tommy Emmanuel workshop at Jorma Kakonen’s Fur Peace Ranch guitar camp in 2005 and then again at the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society (CAAS) convention in 2008.

But it wasn’t until two years later that Central New York’s Barringar and New Zealand’s Mazengarb played together again as unscheduled headliners at the 2010 CAAS Saturday night finale. And that’s when these two guitar mavens knew they had something special going on.

After The Fall

After The Fall

Saturday night is party night!

And if you want to hit all of the CD release parties crammed onto the calendar, you’d better gas up the tank ’cause the celebrations cover the Nippertown front from Albany to Troy to Saratoga Springs:

Churning up their patented brand of hardcore thrash and melodic punk, Albany’s After the Fall celebrates the release of their brand spankin’ new CD “Eradicate” with a show at Valentine’s Music Hall in Albany at 7pm on Saturday. Joining the trio in their festivities will be a whopping bunch o’ bands, including Defeater, Make Do and Mend, Coughing Fit, Legit!, All Teeth, Stereo State and Living With Lions. Admission is $7.

And Troy roots-rockers Sumac will be celebrating the release of their new self-titled, five-song EP with a party and performance at the Ale House in Troy at 9pm on Saturday. Grainbelt opens the show. Admission is $8, which includes a copy of the new CD.

Finally, Lake George singer-songwriter Rich Ortiz is a North Country favorite, who garnered quite a few new Albany fans with his performance at LarkFest last month. The 21st century one-man-band is celebrating the release of his new album, “Face of a Lion,” at Putnam Den is Saratoga Springs at 10pm on Saturday. Opening the show is Scott Sylvester. Admission is free.

Well, you couldn’t have asked for a better day in Albany, although the hot sun and soaring temperatures made it feel more like the Fourth of July instead of mid-September.

We didn’t catch all of the music – with two stages running simultaneously all day long – it was nearly impossible, especially after 2:30pm when the rapidly growing crowd made the stage-to-stage dash difficult, to say the least.

But we saw a lot of music – and it was all pretty good stuff.

The Lake George Arts Project: Annual Summer Sunset Cruise

The Lake George Arts Project: Annual Summer Sunset Cruise

Every year, the Lake George Arts Project presents a series of fundraising events, including the Black Velvet Art Party, Bands and Beans, Spring Fling and the Summer Sunset Cruise. Each of them features a silent auction, raffles, music by the best regional performers and food – lots of food. The money raised helps pay for keeping the Courthouse Gallery, the Wednesday night Summer Concert series in Shepard Park and the Lake George Jazz Weekend going.

Partnering with Shoreline Cruises, the LGAP’s annual Summer Sunset Cruise began at the dock of the Adirondac, a triple-decker rotary paddleboat. Boarding started at 6:30pm, and the cruise began at 7pm, returning two hours later.
