– Reverend Billy & the Stop Shopping Gospel Choir in performance at the Sanctuary for Independent Media on December 18, 2009

Can I get a “Revolujah”?

Let’s make one thing perfectly clear – Reverend Billy ain’t no Joel Osteen…

Part performance artist, part Elvis, part televangelist, Reverend Billy leads the Church of Stop Shopping in a passionate battle against the evils of Corporate Commercialism and Consumerism.

Reverend Billy & the Stop Shopping Gospel Choir bring their anti-corporate preaching to the Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy on Saturday night for the roof-raising “sermon” of “The Declaration of the Occupation” set to song.

As the good Reverend says, “Let’s talk about the Devil. Corporate Commercialism has sped up to a roar, virtually unopposed. Consumerism is normalized in the mind of the average person, sometimes we even refer to ourselves as consumers forgetting that we are also citizens, humans, men, women, animals. We forget that we share many resources, public spaces, libraries, information, history, sidewalks, streets, schools that we created laws and covenants and govenerments to protect us, to support us, to help us… The subjugation of these resources and these laws to the forces of the market demands a response.”

And make no mistake, Reverend Billy is delivering that response loud and clear.

Reverend Billy & the Stop Shopping Gospel Choir will perform “The Declaration of the Occupation” at the Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy at 8pm on Saturday. Tix are $10.

“What Would Jesus Buy?”

December 15th, 2009, 11:15 am by Greg

Nothing says conspicuous consumerism like a shopping mall at Christmas time, as most of us have already found out in the past several weeks.

But the documentary film, “What Would Jesus Buy?” aims to make us think about the holidays in a different way – a non-shopping kind of way.

The film focuses on the issues of the commercialization of Christmas, materialism, the over-consumption in American culture, globalization and the business practices of large corporations, as seen through the prism of activist/performance artist “Reverend Billy” Talen. The film follows Billy and his choir as they take a cross-country trip in the month prior to Christmas 2005, spreading their message against the evils of patronizing several different large corporate retail chains.

Reverend Billy will be on hand for the screening of “What Would Jesus Buy?” at The Linda in Albany at 7pm Thursday (December 17).

Then at 8pm Friday (December 18), Reverend Billy and the Church of Life After Shopping Choir ask the musical question, “Are You Ready For The Shopocalypse?,” with a performance at the Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy. Joined by the Not Buying It Band, Reverend Billy’s performance is part of his “Blessed are the Jobless! Blessed are the Broke!” Christmas Tour.
