LIVE: The Joe Krown Trio @ Red Square, 3/27/12

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

Review by Fred Rudofsky

A Tuesday night of some New Orleans rhythm and blues was just what the doctor ordered for this music fan. Severely sprained thumb in a splint, hectic brain trying to fathom how to grade a few dozen essays in the next few days, soul trying to figure out if Miss Right even exists in this lifetime – yep, I needed to hear something salubrious, transcendent and funky. And just like they had the year before, the Joe Krown Trio delivered big time at Red Square in Albany.

The trio – legendary guitarist/singer Walter “Wolfman” Washington, drummer extraordinaire Russell Batiste, Jr. and Hammond B-3 maestro Joe Krown – played two outstanding 70-minute sets to an appreciative, decent-sized crowd on a school night.

NAME: Blake Christiana
BAND AFFILIATION: Yarn
INSTRUMENT: Singer/Guitar

1. THE FIRST ALBUM I EVER BOUGHT WAS … The first couple of albums I remember getting on my own is Van Halen’s “1984″ and that Run DMC record with “It’s Tricky” on it. Both of these we’re on vinyl.

2. THE FIRST CONCERT THAT I EVER SAW WAS … I am not entirely certain about this, but I think it was Crosby, Stills & Nash at SPAC. But as a kid my father would take me to see live music at local bars/restaurants all the time.

3. THE FIRST MUSICAL INSTRUMENT I EVER OWNED OR PLAYED WAS … My dad got me a guitar when I was very young, but I also remember getting a drum pad in elementary school when I was even younger, thinking I might learn to play drums. That never happened.

4. THE FIRST SONG THAT I EVER PERFORMED IN PUBLIC WAS … “Down in the Valley” – traditional. I think I was 9 or 10, and I used to take lessons at Drome Sound in Schnectady. They held recitals once a month, and I played an instrumental version of “Down in the Valley.” It must have been awful.

5. THE FIRST BAND I WAS EVER IN WAS … Felix, which turned into Kyndness. Just your typical high school band, it was fronted by Shane Spaulding. Shane and I still write together to this day; he has a bunch of co-writing credits on the Yarn albums, as well.

Blake Christiana and his Yarn bandmates roll into Red Square in Albany on Thursday night (November 17) for an evening of Americana and country-rock. Showtime is 9pm. Tix are $10 in advance; $12 at the door.

LIVE: The Marco Benevento Trio @ Red Square, 10/22/11

Andy Bolger and Marco Beneveneto

When you’re in a performance space the size of Red Square, it usually means “back to basics.” And as far as the viewing portion of the equation goes, that’s true: It’s pretty much “Stand up, or go home.” (Two friends of mine beat that system, but I went the standard route, and I’ve got an ice-pack on my back to prove it.) But any club with the art Red Square displays and the microbrews Red Square serves isn’t that simple, in the same way that saying “Marco Beneveneto plays piano” isn’t that simple.

Saugerties’ most recent transplant plays a 1927 Wurlitzer stand-up piano, which travels with him everywhere he performs; that meant hauling it here from Portsmouth, NH, where Beneveneto is finishing a residency – and where, Beneveneto admitted with some chagrin, “We left all the merch!” The word “portable” does not come to mind when you see this instrument, and loading it in and out of venues must be an absolute bitch. But Beneveneto has played “Pimp My Piano” with this thing, and I’m not referring to the fake lion’s head that’s attached to one side. A laptop and an electronic keyboard live on the top of the piano, and the shelf above the keyboard has so many effects buttons, you’d think Nels Cline had switched instruments. Combine this with the piano’s exposed workings – which allowed Beneveneto to mute chords with one hand while he played with the other – and this sucker is the musical version of Frankenstein. And that’s appropriate, given what a freaking monster Beneveneto’s trio is.

If there is a soundtrack for feeling happy, Marco Benevento wrote it. That’s evident on Benevento’s third studio album, “Between the Needles and Nightfall” on the Royal Potato Family label. His exuberant live shows often inspire wild dancing, not something necessarily associated with the piano.

Benevento says, “I was influenced by certain records when recording, namely the German band Can. Two songs off the new album – ‘Greenpoint’ and ‘RISD’ – were reminiscent of dance tunes with one repeating thing. They reach out into a more dance-oriented, upbeat instrumental rock sound versus a piano-led rock-jazz kind of thing. More like a David Byrne/Talking Heads style, but, of course, in a different manner, with loop writing.

“We recorded the new album in three days with post-production at my studio. Tracking with the band is easy. We try out new ideas – adding keyboards and mess around with it with drum loops and create arrangements that way. It’s a real fun way to track it, layering it with effects, and perfecting each track. The band trusts that it is going into the hands of the person who has the vision.”

1. THE FIRST ALBUM I EVER BOUGHT WAS … “Aerosmith’s Greatest Hits Of The ’70s” on cassette tape

2. THE FIRST CONCERT THAT I EVER SAW WAS … It was either ZZ Top or the Allman Brothers at the Great New York State Fair many a year ago. I can’t remember which one was first…

3. THE FIRST MUSICAL INSTRUMENT I EVER OWNED OR PLAYED WAS … I believe the first instrument I ever owned was a plastic toy guitar that you could actually play – it was fretted correctly and had six strings. Instead of actually playing it though, I would just strum all the open strings as obnoxiously as I could and belt out the words, “Ooh my baby, Ooh my baby!” over and over again at the top of my lungs. An auspicious start to say the least.
