Ray White with Project Object

Project/Object gave Albany a fun glimpse into ’70s Frank Zappa music in a club setting. From the instrumentation to the dancability to the voices, one got to hear Zappa’s signature style throughout the show.

Being up front, I was particularly entralled with Ray White’s performance, as he was quite a visual showman. Another Zappa alum Ike Willis also got down on guitar. The song “Hot Rats” was very well sung by Ike and was performed as a duo, which was a treat.

LIVE: Project/Object @ Revolution Hall, 1/9/10

Frank Zappa died in 1993. But not his music.

An off-shoot of a Zappa birthday celebration in the New Jersey basement of guitarist Andre Cholmondeley, Project/Object has carried on Zappa’s musical legacy. Not only was Project/Object among the very first Zappa tribute bands, but, as Cholmondeley pointed out at Revolution Hall in Troy on Saturday night, they’re the only tribute band “with actual ingredients.”

“Accept no substitutes,” chimed in vocalist-guitarist Ike Willis, himself a decade-long veteran of Zappa’s bands.
