Real Good for Free: Albany Jazz Festival, 9/12/09

Friday, September 11th, 2009

It’s been known as the Albany Jazz Festival.
It’s also been named the Albany Riverfront Jazz Festival.
But apparently now it’s got yet another new name – the Albany All America City Jazz Festival.

Whatever you call it, it’s a great day for Nippertown jazz fans – a full day of jazz performances at Albany’s Riverfront Park in the Corning Preserve beginning at 12:30pm on Saturday, September 12.

For free.

Here’s the line-up:

12:30pm: The Lee Shaw Trio featuring Rich Syracuse (bass) and Jeff Siegel (drums)
1:45pm: The Dan Loomis Quartet
3:15pm: The Dirty Dozen Brass Band
4:45pm: Lizz Wright
6:15pm: The Joe Lovano Us Five featuring James Weidman (piano), Cameron Brown (bass), Matt Wilson (drums) and Francisco Mela (drums)

In case of rain, the festival will move indoors to the Palace Theatre.

And immediately following the festival, the Lee Shaw Trio will host a jam session at 74 State in Albany from 8:30-11:30pm. Don’t be surprised if several of the festival performers show up to sit in…

Maya Lin: Storm King Wavefield

Maya Lin: Storm King Wavefield

Take the day off from work tomorrow and celebrate the the relationship between art and nature.

The Storm King Art Center in Mountainville is an amazing outdoor sculpture garden that stretches on and on for 500 acres. It’s pretty much impossible to see everything in just one day of walking around the grounds – although there are regularly scheduled tram tours if you want to give your legs a bit of a rest.

New this summer is Maya Lin’s massive, rolling “Storm King Wavefield,” a mesmerizing earthwork.

If you haven’t been to Storm King yet this summer, tomorrow (Thursday, August 27) is a great day to go for a visit – admission is free all day long. One day only. Bring a picnic and make a day of it.

Real Good for Free: Spencer Day @ Hudson Waterfront Park, 8/21/09

A year ago, Spencer Day was singing at the Tanglewood Jazz Weekend. Now, with his new album slated to drop on Tuesday, September 8, the up-and-coming vocalist-songwriter-pianist is headed into the Hudson Waterfront Park in Hudson for a free concert at 7pm on Friday, August 21.

The new 14-song album, “Vagabond,” marks Day’s debut for the Concord Jazz label, but he doesn’t seem too concerned about sticking strictly to the confines of jazz.

“I wanted to create a musical hybrid,” says Day. “I’ve drawn from the Great American Songbook quite a bit in the past, but I really wanted to infuse this album with a more contemporary aesthetic and also draw on some influences from the early ’60s, like Burt Bacharach, Roy Orbison and Dusty Springfield.

What took us so long? We finally made it to the Storm King Art Center in Mountainville (near Newburgh) and feel a little chagrined at not having visited sooner. Storm King has an eyepopping collection of sculptures situated on 500 acres of lawns, fields and woodlands, including works by Richard Serra, George Rickey, Henry Moore, Isamu Noguchi and David Smith.
