Old Songs Contra Dance Series 2012

An old dance tradition gets new legs this weekend when two of Nippertown’s leading proponents of traditional dance – Old Songs and Homespun Occasions – join forces to kick off a new monthly series of Old Songs Community Dances. The first of the dances will take place at Old Songs in Voorheesville at 7:30pm on Saturday (November 3), featuring caller Paul Rosenberg and live music by Tamarack. The evening begins with a covered dish supper at 6:30pm.

The idea behind the dance series is to create a family-friendly community dance. The series will feature simple, fun, joyous dances from the U.S. and around the world in circle, square, contra and other configurations. It’s a long-standing tradition to bring people of all ages together in an evening of simple joyous dances that anyone of any age can do, whether you have ever danced before or not.

Admission is $7; children $3.

Here’s the schedule for the upcoming Community Dances at Old Songs:

SATURDAY (NOVEMBER 3): Paul Rosenberg calls; Tamarack plays.
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 1: Gail Griffith calls; Fennig’s All-Stars play.
SATURDAY, JANUARY 5: Fern Bradley calls; Fennig’s All-Stars play.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 2: Bob Nicholson calls; Fancy That plays.
SATURDAY, MARCH 2: John Kirk & Trish Miller call; John & Trish play, too.

LIVE: “Four Seasons, Four Years – The Civil War: A Musical Journey” @ Old Songs, 11/17/11

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

The American Civil War was a brutal, bloody struggle, pitting North against South and brother against brother. It literally tore the country in two. But the set list was great.

Old Songs’ presentation of “Four Seasons, Four Years – The Civil War: A Musical Journey” brings the songs and sounds of the Civil War back to life without stinting on the truth, the tragedy and the horror.

Ken Burns famously fused folk music with history in his PBS “The Civil War” series, but “Four Seasons, Four Years” creator Andy Spence (whose great-grandfather fought for the Union) has truly brought the war home by focusing on New York State sources.

John Whelan, What Was the First Album You Ever Bought?

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

John Whelan“I would have to say that probably the first album that I ever bought would have had to have been by Joe Burke, the great accordion player from Galway.

The reason I bought it was because I recorded an album for the same record company when I was 14 years old.

It was Outlet Records in Belfast, and Joe Burke had a new album out called ‘Galway’s Own Joe Burke.’ And I’m pretty sure that was the first album that I ever got.”

Celtic accordionist John Whelan teams up with French Canadian fiddler Donna Hebert to explore the Irish-French connection in concert at Old Songs in Voorheesville at 8pm on Saturday, February 12. Tix are $20; ages 12 & under $5.
