FOR SALE: Nipper… Yes, the Big One!

The Arnoff Building is for sale.

By Greg Haymes

Nipper – the four-ton, 28-foot-tall canine icon who has been the faithful guardian of the Albany skyline for 60 years now – is up for sale… along with the building atop which he (or she) stands.

Nipper and the four-story building at 991 Broadway, as well as several adjacent properties are all owned by Arnoff Moving and Storage, which is looking to sell and relocate to a larger facility.

The asking price? $3.97 million.

Well, that’s a wee bit out of our price range, even for a giant multi-national comglomerate like But then one word flashed into our heads…

I shot this photo on Saturday, July 14 while on the road. This old Nipper statue sits in the front store window on Mynotera Old Books at 65 E. Market Street, Suite 101 in Corning, NY. I was stuck in Corning on Friday night, busked Saturday morning and afternoon (was kicked out of the square by “The District”) and wandered after a bit.

A Great Big Thank You to Metroland Readers

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011
Hey, somebody out there likes me!

Hey, somebody out there likes me!

We’ve uncorked the champagne, and the bubbly is flowing in celebration of the results of the Metroland Readers’ Poll in today’s issue of the weekly.

Metroland readers bestowed double honors on, voting us as the Best Local Website for Arts, as well as the Best Local Website for Music.

And we’re just as proud of the results in the Best Local Arts Coverage category, where we were competing against the Big Boys of Print – Metroland, The Daily Gazette, The Times Union, etc. – and grabbed second place, behind our friends at Metroland.

We’d also like to congratulate our mascot Nipper, who garnered at least one vote in the write-in category of Best Local Celebrity Whom You’d Like To Marry for Their Money. (Void where prohibited by law.)

So thank you, astute and discerning Metroland readers, for showing us (and, of course, all of our contributors) some big love. And we promise to do all that we can to continue to make your go-to click-to for area music, arts and entertainment info.
