Before playing “Household Words,” the wistful closing track on Nelson Esposito Quintana’s new disc None of the Above, guitarist Todd Nelson told the audience that bassist Kyle Esposito engineered the recording and drummer Manuel Quintana created the cover design. “I just play guitar,” Nelson added, trying to sound sheepish. If only it were that simple…

The musical creature that Nelson and his cohorts have created has Nelson’s no-nonsense, glass-eating guitar sound right at its base. It was that lack of frills that caught my ear in 2010 when Nelson released Here, a re-invention that would make Spinal Tap jealous: The jazz-meets-rock-and-elopes attack Nelson served up was as far from the Units and Fear Of Strangers as you could get without a working warp drive, despite the reboots of FOS material that sat amongst Nelson’s new compositions. The trio (gigging as TN3) shaped this literally vibrant sound over the last few years until it became a true collaboration, and this necessitated that None bear the name of all participants in the hive mind. Both the disc and the mind – henceforth referred to as NEQ – got a rollout at Albany’s Madison Theater, and the results were most scintillating.

Todd Nelson, What Do You Listen to on the Way Home from a Gig?

“If my ears aren’t totally exhausted after a gig, I’ll either listen to ‘Jazz After Hours’ from Seattle (I forget the name of the new host), or I’ll turn on some classical music. I find the change of instrumentation and structure helps displace what’s still playing in my head. I’m usually too tired to choose a CD by that time.”

Todd Nelson plays guitar in Nelson Esposito Quintana (the artists formerly known as TN3), who drop their new CD None of the Above with a release party at Albany’s Madison Theater at 8pm on Friday (May 8). Opening the show will be a reunion of Seven Rabbit Stew, featuring Nelson’s former Fear of Strangers bandmate Al Kash on drums. Tickets are $10, which includes a copy of the new CD.

The Name Game: Say Goodbye to TN3

There’s no more TN3.

When the trio of guitarslinger Todd Nelson, bassmaster Kyle Esposito and percolating percussionist Manuel Quintana released their debut album, Here, back in 2010, the disc was credited to Todd Nelson. Along the way, the trio adopted the moniker TN3, a more genre-defying name than the Todd Nelson Trio, which might somewhat mistakenly lump them into the jazz bag.

But a lot has happened since then…

Now the band is about to release their long-in-the-works sophomore disc next week, and they knew it was time for a change.
