With Mona Golub at the helm, the slogan for the Music Haven Concert Series is, “Traveling the world one concert at a time,” and the series kicked off its 25th anniversary season last month in Africa.

Not just any African band, either. Mokoomba hails from the isolated town of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, and their appearance in Schenectady’s Central Park was their first ever concert on American soil. And what a concert it was. led by vocalist Mathias Muzaza, Mokoomba was all-around terrific: great dancers, great singers and great players.

Real Good for FREE: The Music Haven Concert Series in Schenectady’s Central Park

Friday, May 31st, 2013

Travel the world one concert at a time!

For years now, that’s been the slogan of the free, summertime Music Haven Concert Series that takes place in the heart of Schenectady’s Central Park. And this year is no different.

The 2013 seven-concert series roams the globe with musical styles ranging from South African soul to rootsy Americana; from gut-busting gospel to hot salsa; and from piano blues to Malian guitar pyrotechnics.

“We’re thrilled to present another season of incredible music in Central Park,” says Music Haven founder and artistic director Mona Golub. “We can’t wait to see the joy on people’s faces when they experience these shows.”

The Music Haven Concert Series will take place at 7pm on Sundays from July 7-August 11. And as always, admission is FREE.

Here’s the schedule for the 2013 season:

It’s certainly not the way that you would want to end your season, but what can you do? The music world is full of the unexpected, and you’ve got to be able to improvise…

The Music Haven in Schenectady’s Central Park was slated to wrap up its 2012 season with the Irish band McPeake. But unfortunately, the band was unable to get into the U.S. due to a last minute visa snafu, so they were forced to cancel their Schenectady appearance.

Despite a steady and, at times, heavy rain, Diego Garcia and his band played the Music Haven in Schenectady’s Central Park last Sunday, and the crowd responded with swooning enthusiasm – particularly during a sing-a-long on “All Eyes On You” and several other songs which have received heavy airplay on local station WEXT-FM.

The Music Haven in Schenectady’s Central Park continued its musical travels around the world one concert at a time by journeying with Matuto to Northeastern Brazil and other parts of the Americas. Led by guitarist Clay Ross, this band brought its eclectic sound to a small but appreciative crowd that braved a very heavy – but quickly passing – downpour to see the band last Sunday evening.

The unusual combination of guitar, bass, accordion, trap drums and percussion served up a set of truly uncategorizable music. One could hear the sounds of roots music of all kinds – ranging from Northeast Brazilian forro to bluegrass – in the band’s spicy musical gumbo.
