New Release Rack: Mike Gent’s “The Rapid Shave”

October 31st, 2013, 3:00 pm by Greg

From the Figgs to Graham Parker’s band…
From the Candy Butchers to the Gentlemen…

Singer-songwriter-guitarist Mike Gent has been making great music for years now, and he’s about to drop a great new batch of music on us this weekend.

The Boston-based Gent will be celebrating the release of his new album, The Rapid Shave, with a bash downstairs at Valentine’s Music Hall in Albany on Friday (November 1). Gent will be accompanied by his band – also dubbed the Rapid Shave – featuring drummer Ducky Carlisle, keyboardist Ted Collins and bassist Marc Hickox. Opening the show at 8pm will be the Amazon Debutantes.

The Rapid Shave – the album – features a dozen new songs, including the first single, “Last Boat to Japan,” and a new song penned by Graham Parker, “Shutting Down.”

(Actually, Mike Gent’s show will be the second of back-to-back CD release parties at Valentine’s on Friday, following the 6pm happy hour bash by Blue Factory.)

“Is there anything more boring than watching one man onstage?” asked Mike Gent before his recent solo show at Spring Street Gallery in Saratoga Springs. “I find watching people play solo to be incredibly boring, so I’m glad you came out,” he added a few minutes later. But Gent – who plays guitar in Saratoga-born rock and roll band the Figgs – kept the crowd in the small art gallery/music venue rapt as he played a mix of Figgs tunes, solo songs, newly written numbers and covers.

Former hometown heroes the Figgs – well, they’re still our heroes, but they’re not really hometowners anymore – dished up some of the tastiest rock & roll that we heard last year with stops at Valentine’s Music Hall and Putnam Den in celebration of their 25th anniversary. Now it looks like they’re trying a different tact for 2013 – with the bandmembers rolling into town one at a time.

Mike Gent, What Was the First Album You Ever Bought?

October 16th, 2009, 12:19 pm by Greg

MikeGent“As far as I can remember, I think the first record album that I bought was the Beatles’ ‘Let It Be’ at K-Mart. I was really young, too. I was probably like five years old or something. Another one of my first records was also `Scraps’ by NRBQ.

Those are the earliest albums that I remember buying, but the first 45 RPM that I ever had was ‘Sundown’ by Gordon Lightfoot, which I still have.”

With the Figgs on a short hiatus, Mike Gent leads his other band the Rapid Shave into Valentine’s Music Hall on Saturday, October 17.
