Shipp Shape: Matthew Shipp, Live From Troy

February 21st, 2011, 1:00 pm by Greg

Matthew Shipp: Art of the ImproviserLast April, pianist-composer Matthew Shipp gathered his trio – featuring bassist Michael Bisio and drummer Whit Dickey – for an adventurous, forward-thinking evening of thoroughly contemporary jazz at the Arts Center of the Capital Region in Troy. Sponsored by the Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy, the concert was held in conjunction with the opening of “Freedom Through Collective Improvisation,” an exhibition of concert photography by Nippertown’s own chief photographer Andrzej Pilarczyk.

Read our reviews of the concert here and here.

Well, if you missed the show, you’re in luck. Shipp’s new two-CD set, “The Art of the Improviser,” is being released Tuesday on Thirsty Ear Recordings, and while one of the discs features Shipp playing solo, the other disc in the set is a live recording from that Troy trio performance.

Here’s the track listing for the disc recorded in Troy:
The New Fact
3 In 1
Circular Temple Number 1
Take The A Train
Virgin Complex
