“I don’t remember the first album that I bought, but I remember the first record that I heard that really struck a chord in me. It was Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys. It was their Foggy Mountain Banjo album.

I was probably about ten years old at the time, and I just loved that record. That’s what made me want to learn to play the banjo.”

Pioneering banjo player Alison Brown and her band take the stage at the FreshGrass Bluegrass Festival at MASS MoCA in North Adams this weekend. The three-day fest kicks off on Friday (September 21), and Brown grabs the spotlight at 4:45pm on Saturday. Go here for the fest’s complete schedule of bands…

“I want to thank you all for bidding on these tickets to support one of our favorite places: MASS MoCA. I would like to call out the person who got a ticket for one dollar,” said a fedora-wearing Jeff Tweedy from the stage, as I felt somewhat relieved that the complete cheapskate in the crowd wasn’t me.

In an unusual twist, Wilco – unable or too worn-out to stage their annual three-day Solid Sound Festival at MASS MoCA this year – offered to play a benefit for the contemporary art museum instead. (Solid Sound is slated to return next year on the weekend of June 21-23.)

Roomful of Teeth will Cap Third Year Residency with Performance August 31 at Mass MoCA [Berkshire on Stage]

After three years of well attended performances at MASS MoCA in 2009, 2010, and 2011, Roomful of Teeth returns to perform what is quickly becoming an annual sold-out favorite on Friday, August 31, at 8 PM in the museum’s intimate Club B-10. Roomful of Teeth is a vocal octet that embraces the full spectrum of non-traditional vocal practices and develops new compositions through an ongoing commissioning project. Founded in 2008 by Williams College music educator, conductor, and singer Brad Wells, the ensemble is built upon the idea that any singer can learn any “non-native” singing language, regardless of his or her background. Roomful of Teeth incorporates an ever-widening circle of singing styles and invites composers to develop new works for this new model of vocal ensemble. For this year’s work-in-progress concert, Roomful of Teeth will perform work by young composer Missy Mazzoli, who Time Out NY calls “Brooklyn’s post-millennial Mozart”.

Roomful of Teeth is founded upon the notion that the membranes that separate one vocal style from another are wholly permeable. Brad Wells says singing styles are “audible fingerprints”, as they serve as markers of the human diaspora on the original instrument, the voice. He believes that the vocal techniques required to create these diverse fingerprints can be taught to anyone despite cultural, ethnic, and musical background. Wells hopes to “bring the full range of human voice back together for a family reunion” by incorporating and overlapping varied singing techniques from around the world into one ensemble of performers.

Dance/Theater Artist Nora Chipaumire Brings Team to MASS MoCA to Work on Preview “Miriam” [Berkshire on Stage]

Nora Chipaumire shows her new work on August 25, at Mass MoCA.

Mass MoCA has announced that on Saturday, August 25, 2012, after a two week-long residency, renowned choreographer and dancer Nora Chipaumire works with an all-star team including acclaimed composer and pianist Omar Sosa, Long Wharf Theater associate artistic director Eric Ting, lighting designer Olivier Clausse, and dancer Okwui Okpokwasili to present a preview of Chipaumire’s newest work, Miriam. This deeply personal dance-theater performance looks closely at the tensions women face between public expectations and private desires; between selflessness and ambition; and between the perfection and sacrifice of the feminine ideal. The New York Times calls Chipaumire “an artist of ferocious intensity” and Dance Magazine says “Chipaumire has become a rock star of downtown dance, with a majestic quality that blows everything else out of the water.”

Ed. Note: While not quite finished works, these work in progress “showings” are always interesting to see. Some people are reluctant to spend an evening at one of these works-in-progress and worry that they will only get to see a part of the creative enterprise, not the finished work. For me, some of these experiences have been spellbinding, but I concede that there is a roll of the dice element about them too. A good way to approach previews is to try to find a video of earlier iterations of the project. After years of watching the process, I am beginning to sense that some artists never intend to finish their works. A few have become very adept at workshopping their way around the country for months and years. Just look at all the credits at the end of these sorts of announcements to see how it works. That’s why a video will at least give you a sampling of how you will spend your time. If you like the previous work, you are likely to enjoy the latest wrinkle in it, too. L.M.

Ophira Eisenberg brings her Poignant Comedy at Mass MoCA on August 18 [Berkshire on Stage]

Wednesday, August 15th, 2012

North Adams, MA – Hailing from Alberta, Canada, and now based out of New York City, comedian and storyteller Ophira Eisenberg makes the trek to the Berkshires on Saturday, August 18, at 8 PM, for an Alt Cabaret performance on MASS MoCA’s Club B-10 stage. Eisenberg is a regular on The Moth, a New York City-based nonprofit organization that conducts live storytelling events, and can frequently be found performing stand-up at many of the city’s comedy clubs. Surely the mark of a comedian on the rise, she has been praised by Best of New York.com as “a rare combination of a sharp stand-up and a brilliant storyteller”.

The New York Times reports: “What distinguishes Ms. Eisenberg is how thoughtfully she adjusts to the form she’s working in while retaining the essence of her bleakly stylish humor.” Her natural wit and clever charm captivate her spectators, no matter who or where they are. “Give her just a minute,” says The Apiary Magazine, “and Ophira will win you over.”

Warning: 500 Clown’s “Trapped” May Cause Contagious, Side-Splitting Laughter at MASS MoCA August 11 [Berkshire on Stage]

500 Clown @ MASS MoCA

North Adams, MA - Slapstick troupe 500 Clown promises to make kids and adults alike giggle uncontrollably on Saturday, August 11, when the company comes to MASS MoCA’s Hunter Center with performances at 2 PM and 7 PM. By combining the elements of risk, action, and humor, 500 Clown has been surprising and thrilling audiences across the country and around the world for more than a decade.

Born in Chicago in 2001, 500 Clown is physical theater at its best. The company uses action-based performance, improvisation, and circus arts to tell long-form, dramatic stories that catapult the performers into both physical and emotional chance-taking situations. The Chicago Reader calls 500 Clown “insane, inspired, risk-loving, [and] intensely physical”. The group has performed across the world, including PS 122 in New York City, the Orange County Performing Arts Center in California, and the Midland Arts Center in Birmingham, England.

In Trapped, 500 Clown ricochets between planned elements and improvisation at breakneck speed to powerful effect. The remarkably clever ensemble is unexpectedly ensnared – trapped – in an innovative set piece, and hilariously tries to escape. Each clown-musician’s response spirals out of control, into slapstick mishaps and Vaudevillian turns, as they try to escape the trap they’ve set for themselves. All ages will appreciate the mix of high physicality, raw emotion, and powerful storytelling in 500 Clown’s Trapped.

Real Estate performs at Mass MoCA on August 9, 2012.

North Adams, MA – The indie band Real Estate brings its considered, melodic pop songs to MASS MoCA on Thursday, August 9, at 8 PM. From suburban New Jersey, the band comes to North Adams with music that echoes the mellow and unique charm of quasi-rural life. After receiving high praise for its self-titled debut album in 2009 and the release of its sophomore album Days this fall, Real Estate joins MASS MoCA’s summer concert line-up.

The band is on a steady and easy rise to greatness, consolidating the breezy sketches of its earlier work into organized, soft, and sentimental numbers. Real Estate shares MASS MoCA’s mission to create extraordinary art in an ordinary, small-town setting. AllMusic commends the band for “finding the bittersweet, whimsical, and poetic in everyday suburban life-the real life behind real estate”.

After years of friendship and musical get-togethers, singer/guitarist Martin Courtney, guitarist Matt Mondanile, and bassist Alex Bleeker formed the band in 2008. Between various singles and the 2009 debut, Real Estate emerged as a talented group in the performing arts community. In 2011, Jackson Poilis and Jonah Maurer joined Real Estate on drums and keys/guitar, respectively, and the band signed with Domino Recording Company. The band reached new heights with its 2011 album Days, a compilation of simple, timeless songs, which surpasses its first album in coherence and vocal courage. Pitchfork Media chose Days as number nine on its “Top 50 Albums of 2011″. Days captures the essence of Ridgewood, New Jersey, making Real Estate’s lyrics relatable to small-town fans.
