The Egg has been doing a marvellous job recently, bringing some of the finest contemporary Celtic performers to Albany. Luka Bloom, Paul Brady and Maura O’Connell have all graced the small and cosy Swyer Theater stage in just the past six weeks. This time around the spotlight was on the incomparable Mary Black.

Mary Black, What Was the First Album You Ever Bought?

“When I was growing up as a kid, we had no gramophone. But I do remember buying a seven-inch single by the Monkees when I was around 10 or 11 or 12, I suppose – around that time.

But on a more serious level, in my teens I was listening to albums by Billie Holiday, Fairport Convention featuring Sandy Denny, Joni Mitchell and Bonnie Raitt. A lot of American singers, actually, now that I think about it. And Aretha Franklin, too.

Sandy Denny was my hero, really, when I was in my teens, so she was the one that I was listening to very closely. And I think that she would have been my first serious investment in a record.”

Veteran Irish singer Mary Black makes a stateside tour stop at The Egg in Albany at 7:30pm on Sunday. Irish singer-songwriter Roisin O opens the show. Tix are $24.50, $29.50 and $34.50.
