Yeah, it was pretty darned hot out there in the parking lot during the mid-afternoon concert at Smokin’ Joe’s in East Greenbush, but it wasn’t as hot as the music. Two of Nippertown’s finest blues guitarslingers – Scotty Mac and Mark Emanatian – joined forces with a crack rhythm section featuring drummer Charlie Clifford and bass man Tom Dolan.

Heck, the band didn’t even have a name…

Mark Emanatian Remembers Ernie Williams

I got out of my car in the parking lot of the TC Club on Swan Street in the Arbor Hill section of Albany in 1991. A man came up to me and said, “Are you Mark?” And I said, “You must be Ernie.” We shook hands and went inside, and I played guitar with him for the first time in the Ernie Williams Blues Band. It was a six-piece band, and I was filling in without rehearsal. I watched his hands to get the keys of the tunes. We played from 10pm til 4am. At the end of the night when he was paying me my $50, he asked if I would play with him regular.

1. THE FIRST ALBUM I EVER BOUGHT WAS … “The Worst of Jefferson Airplane”

2. THE FIRST CONCERT THAT I EVER SAW WAS … The 5th Dimension at SPAC. I was 11 ears old. My uncle, who just came home from Vietnam, took me and my sister. It was a thrill.

3. THE FIRST MUSICAL INSTRUMENT I EVER OWNED OR PLAYED WAS … A Saint George Strat copy that I bought from George’s Music in Troy for $10.00 that I saved up from paper route money.

4. THE FIRST SONG THAT I EVER PERFORMED IN PUBLIC WAS … “You Are My Sunshine” at the Little Sisters of the Poor Nursing Home in Troy. We performed for the elderly folks there. It was 1971. I was 14, and we got paid in cookies and milk.

5. THE FIRST BAND I WAS EVER IN WAS … The Third Avenue Blues Band
