Happy Birthday, Marianne Faithfull

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Marianne Faithfull celebrates her 63rd birthday today, and we celebrate with a pair of her tunes that span her career: The Rolling Stones‘ “As Tears Go By” from 1965, and Brian Eno‘s “How Many Worlds” from 2009.

MARIANNE FAITHFULL’s “Easy Come, Easy Go: 12 Songs for Music Lovers”

(Decca, 2009):  Reunited with her musical soulmate/producer Hal Willner, Faithfull wraps her beautifully whiskey ‘n’ cigarettes-ravaged voice around a well-chosen collection of tunes from the songbags of Neko Case, Randy Newman, Morrissey, Duke Ellington, the Decemberists and more. Among those who dropped by the studio to help out are Nick Cave, Rufus Wainwright, Cat Powers and Sean Lennon.

Best of the bunch? It’s a toss-up. Either Smokey Robinson’s “Ooh Baby Baby” sung with Antony (of Antony and the Johnsons, of course). Or Merle Haggard’s classic “Sing Me Back Home” with Keith Richards, which is every bit as good as it looks on paper.
