Churning out an afternoon of thinking woman’s hard rock, guitarist-vocalist Dani Neff led the Austin-based Megafauna in a rip-snortin’ Sunday matinee show at NaNola in Malta earlier this month in support of their new album, Maximalist. Sponsored by WEQX-FM, the free concert also featured openers AM Bodega, formerly known as Milk Toast.

One of the breakthrough bands of last summer’s Solid Sound festival at MASS MoCA, Austin-based White Denim rolled into NaNola in Malta last Sunday afternoon (March 2) for an intimate, invite-only concert sponsored by WEQX-FM. About 100 fans packed into the place for 45-minute performance in support of the band’s Jeff Tweedy-produced album, Corsicana Lemonade.

Win FREE TICKETS to See White Denim @ NaNola on March 2

February 18th, 2014, 12:00 pm by Greg

Austin-based, psychedelic-laced rockers White Denim are on a roll. Their latest album, Corsicana Lemonade, was produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, and the band gave everyone a hearty sampling of the disc when they kicked off last year’s Solid Sound Festival at MASS MoCA in North Adams.

Now the band is on the road, and although they won’t be making a full-on concert stop in Nippertown this time around, the fine folks at WEQX-FM convinced frontman James Petralli and the rest of the boys to roll into NaNola in Malta at 3pm on Sunday afternoon, March 2, to play a short acoustic show for their Local 518 fans.

You can’t buy tickets for the show, however; it’s an invitation-only event. But if you want an invitation you can win one right here. We’re giving away two – count ‘em, 2 – four-packs of tickets.

NaNola’s Grand Opening on Saturday

November 29th, 2013, 12:00 pm by Greg

Let’s get this straight from the start: NaNola is a play on words, combining “nano” (which means small) and Nola (which is an abbreviation for New Orleans, Louisiana). Got it? With Shane Spillenger (formerly of Jillian’s) at the helm, the New Orleans-themed restaurant and bar NaNola first opened its doors about a month ago, but the restaurant/bar will celebrate its official grand opening on Saturday (November 30).

Doors opens at 4pm with a three-hour fundraiser for the Estherville Animal Shelter featuring complimentary hors d’oeuvres and drinks, as well as other food and drink specials. The festivities will be capped off by live music from the Sunny Side of the Street Band beginning at 7pm. And for those who have a little too much fun, Martin, Harding & Mazzoti will be sponsoring a safe-ride home program for the event.

Goodbye, Bayou Cafe! Hello, Bayou Cafe!

March 29th, 2013, 11:00 am by Greg

Mike Philip – formerly of Jillian’s – took over downtown Albany’s Bayou Cafe back in December, but now he’s decided to change the name to the Hollow Bar + Kitchen.

Ironically, Shane Spillenger – also formerly of Jillian’s in Albany – has just signed a lease to open a new Bayou Cafe at 2638 Route 9 in Malta, just north of Northway Exit 12. Spillenger is hoping to open the new Bayou Cafe by June.

And just for the record, Ralph Spillenger – yes, formerly of Jillian’s – is still at the helm of the original Bayou Cafe in Glenville.

CD: The Fighting 86’s’ “Blood Brothers”

March 24th, 2010, 2:01 pm by Greg

The Celtic trio of Nippertown music scene veterans actually made their recording debut back in January – backing up tireless troubadour Frank Jaklitsch for a handful of tunes on his latest album, “Some Hearts.”

But “Blood Brothers” is the official full-length debut from the Fighting 86’s, and it’s a fitting representation of the band, a perfect blend of old and new, urgent vocals and instrumental prowess.

The album takes off like a shot with the traditional fiddle ‘n’ drum-driven instrumental “Bodhran.” It kicks the album into high gear and then steamrolls to its rousing conclusion, all in under two minutes.
