Harvest_Fest_048

Sunday’s Local Harvest Festival at Washington Park Lakehouse came with a much needed break in the weather. The the lovely fall day and the promise of good, and good for you, food in small sampler cups drew steady lines.

WRPI’s Laura Glazer served as host, and with that unmistakable voice of hers introduced the live music. A pair of the area’s brightest and best young and gifted singer /songwriters went on early and stole the show. The Ashley Pond Band in quartet form kicked it all off sporting a solid mix of great songs and fall fashion. A stripped down duo version of Railbird, or as Sarah Pedinotti quipped, Le Petit Railbird, were in rare form. Chris Kyle later informed me that the intimate and haunting duo arrangements were made up on the spot.

Confetti filled skies: Richard Nolan Jr., Seth Tillinghast, Matt Ferguson

Beware! the Other Head of Science took the Townsend Park Stage of LarkFest, almost blithely unaware of the festivities occurring simultaneously on Lark Street. Beware! were in their own adjacent universe. Illustrating this point, the gang of six wore matching, dept. of public works-orange t-shirts hand-stenciled with the words, “Larp Fest 09.”

Proud purveyors of electro-pop, Beware’s ploy to steal your retinas was just as quickly followed by a compelling and successful attempt to steal all ears. The frenetic band exploded with energy, confetti and music. The set was littered with clever numbers like “Monster Song” about Lake Champlain’s Champ and “Winter Coats” (slang for beards).

“What a nice surprise,” Moby says about playing at LarkFest on Saturday, although I think he got a low-ball estimate of the crowd numbers.

If you want to read his blog entry about LarkFest, here it is…

The Church is and has been a very good band for a very long time. At last Friday night’s intimate performance at The Egg, the Church quite simply rocked.

Gone are the support of major labels Warner Brothers and Arista. Even the post-”Starfish” Arista releases – numbering three – were an intentional move away from a simple follow-up to “Under the Milky Way,” the band’s lone Top 40 hit.

Hanging Out @ Troy Night Out

Monday, June 29th, 2009

The monthly Troy Night Out continues to set the bar high for Nippertown arts and music activities. As a reminder, Troy Night Out takes place on the last Friday of each month in downtown Troy. And the Troy arts community continues to grow and strengthen. This month, two new venues – the Artcentric Gift Gallery and Casper Land Studio & Gallery – celebrated their grand openings.

Here are a few snaps from June’s jaunt:

LIVE: Rustic Overtones Rock the River

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Troy was rockin’ in a typical kinda summertime Hump Day fashion on Wednesday, June 24, as Portland Maine-iacs the Rustic Overtones and Nippertown soul stirrers Nautilus brough the fun, the funk and some pretty sharp shoes to the weekly Rockin’ on the River concert series.

LIVE: River Street Festival Wrapup

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

A little rain never hurt anybody. And it certainly didn’t keep many folks away from downtown Troy for the sixth annual River Street Festival on Saturday, June 20.

Although armed with only an acoustic guitar, Rob Dickinson somehow managed to conjure up the massive wall of sound of his old band, the Catherine Wheel.

Chris Barron declared, “Yes, I’m that guy from the Spin Doctors,” as he delivered a solo performance of Spin Docs classics and tunes from his new solo album, “Pancho and the Kid.”

Mike Doughty wasn’t the headliner, but you’d never have known it from the enthusiastic crowd reaction. Barefoot violinist Caroline Pook joined him for most of his rain-soaked set.

Straight outta Connecticut, the Alternate Routes served up the festival’s opening set.

The festival’s second stage showcased a lot of Nippertown’s homegrown musical talent, including Simple Theory.

And of course, no festival on River Street would ever be complete with a sidewalk chalk painting competition. Among the entries were dog portraits, Van Gogh wanna-bes, cartoon characters, landscapes, trippy abstracts and more…

And in addition to presenting the massive exhibition of the Fence Show artwork in the galleries, the Arts Center of the Capital Region also hosted performances by Eddie Ade Knowles and Ensemble Congeros:
