Win FREE TIX to the Premiere of Kota Yamazaki & Fluid Hug-Hug’s “(glowing)” @ EMPAC at RPI

April 3rd, 2012, 10:00 am by Greg

Choreographer Kota Yamazaki and his dance company Fluid Hug-Hug take a world view of modern dance with their new dance work, “(glowing),” which will have its premiere at EMPAC at RPI in Troy at 8pm on Friday (April 6).

In this powerful work for six dancers, Yamazaki draws on his own deep background in the Japanese dance form of butoh and explores the connections that exist between butoh, traditional African dance and contemporary movement.

For “(glowing),” Yamazaki draws inspiration from Jun’ichirō Tanizaki’s essay “In’ei Raisan (In Praise of Shadows),” which plumbs the unique Japanese aesthetics of shadows and darkness. Dancers from Senegal and Ethiopia join Japanese butoh dancers and American contemporary performers to create a scenario in which lightless vision ignites the imagination, conjuring illusion and upturning the ordinary between the shadows.

Bodies emerge, float, and then disappear into the shadows of a dimly lit architecture…

Kota Yamazaki | Fluid hug-hug will premier “(glowing)” at 8pm on Friday (April 6) at EMPAC at RPI in Troy. Tix are $18.
