America vs. England – No, It’s Not the World Cup…

Friday, September 10th, 2010

Earlier this summer, we thought it was a rather odd booking when the Empire State Plaza celebrated the most American of holidays – Independence Day – with a Fourth of July headlining performance by a British Invasion band – Herman’s Hermits.

Now on Sunday, the City of Troy is honoring “Uncle Sam” Wilson – perhaps the most quintessential of American icons – with a parade and a free concert in Knickerbacker Park featuring the Liverpool Invasion, an all-star aggregation featuring ’60s vintage British popsters Billy J. Kramer (of the Dakotas), Joey Molland (of Badfinger) and Terry Sylvester (of the Hollies).

We’re not trying to start another Revolutionary War here or anything, and we’ve got nothing against British music – really, some of our favorite bands are from England – but when you’re celebrating America and its heroes, isn’t it possible to throw a party without outsourcing the music to the former enemy?

Sunday’s Uncle Sam Celebration kicks off at 1pm with a parade that starts at the corner of 125th Street and Fifth Avenue. Immediately following the parade, the celebration will continue at Knickerbacker Park (at 103rd Street and Eighth Avenue) featuring family fun including amusement rides for kids, chicken barbecue and sky divers.

Here’s the music schedule for Knickerbacker Park:

2:30pm: Don “Elvis” Romines
4:15pm: Blue Hand Luke
6:30pm: The Liverpool Invasion

The day-long celebration will conclude with a fireworks display at 8pm.

Summertime has come … and gone … for another year.

But now ain’t the time for your tears. Outdoor music in Nippertown doesn’t just shut down after Labor Day. In fact, there’s still quite a cornucopia of festivals coming our way for the autumn season.

Here’s a quick look at some of the highlights of what’s coming up in the next couple of weeks on the fall festival circuit:
