“I was so much older then, I’m younger than that now…”

Bob Dylan will celebrate his 70th birthday later this month on Tuesday, May 24, and you can bet that his music will fill the air all across the land. There are two big benefit concerts in his honor right here in Nippertown, but, unfortunately, they’re both scheduled at the same time – 8pm on Saturday, May 21.

Caffe Lena – the landmark coffeehouse in Saratoga Springs, where Dylan performed even before his debut album was released – is producing “Celebrating Bob Dylan’s 70th Birthday,” a tribute concert at Skidmore College’s Dance Theater in Saratoga Springs. Michael Eck (who hosted a decade’s worth of Bob Dylan birthday tribute concerts at Union College in Schenectady) and Phil Drum will emcee the festivities, which will include performances by Melick, Moody & McKrell; Jim Gaudet & the Railroad Boys; Streetcorner Holler; Tern Rounders; Jo Henley; Dyer Switch; and Kyle Miller. Tix are $25, and proceeds will benefit Caffe Lena.

Meanwhile, down in Woodstock – where Dylan once lived – the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild is presenting the third annual Bob Dylan Birthday Celebration at the Kleinert/James Arts Center. Happy Traum will return to host the tribute concert featuring an eclectic mix of musicians, including Tracy Bonham, Kate Taylor, Tim Moore, Mike & Ruthy, the Trapps, Frank McGinnis, Doug Yoel, Alex Caton & Pete Winne, Connor Kennedy and more. Tix are $20, and proceeds will benefit the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild.
