Live: Kiss @ SPAC, 8/17/10

Gene Simmons is a marketing genius,” marveled a fan entering the SPAC grounds to see Kiss’ “Hottest Show on Earth” tour last week. He was staring at a sign offering audio recordings of the evening’s performance. Not quite a genius concept – bands have been selling live CDs of their concerts for a while now.

But entering SPAC near the Hall of Springs meant walking past the Kiss bassist’s tour bus, parked where fans could gawk at the flaming-guitar-emblazoned bus that also advertised A&E’s “Gene Simmons Family Jewels” reality TV show. Sitting inside the amphitheater for the show meant staring at another strategically placed bus that featured members of Kiss shilling for Dr. Pepper.

And just traipsing across the lawn meant encountering fans of all ages wearing every kind of Kiss merchandise imaginable, from t-shirts to kids’ costumes. So yes, Gene Simmons and his band mates have marketing savvy, you could say.

Paul Stanley, What Was the First Album You Ever Bought?

August 16th, 2010, 10:06 am by Greg

Paul Stanley“I remember the first concert I saw – Led Zeppelin – because it had much more impact on me.

I listened to the radio a lot, but I really couldn’t afford a lot of records. But I do remember as a real little guy getting a Four Seasons album.

I didn’t have that much money to buy albums, so I bought a lot of singles – a lot of Motown stuff. And I was a huge anglophile – loved all the English bands like the Beatles and everyone else.”

Paul Stanley will slather on the make-up once again and join his KISS bandmates in the spotlight at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs on Tuesday night. The Academy Is… and the Envy open the show at 6:30pm. Amphitheater seats are $46.50, $76.50 and $131; lawn tix are $26.50.

New SPAC Concert: Kiss & Make-Up

June 15th, 2010, 10:07 am by Greg

Yes, Live Nation is pinning a lot of its hopes for the Saratoga Performing Arts Center on those time-honored classic heritage artists. But at least Kiss still isn’t as lame as Chicago or the Doobie Brothers.

That’s right, Kiss – the leather ‘n’ make-up-clad titans of arena rock who have nothing more on their minds than rock ‘n’ rolling all night and partyin’ every day – are headed into SPAC at 6:30pm on Tuesday, August 17.

Opening the show will be the Academy Is… and the Envy.

With reserved seats priced at $46.50, $76.50 & $131, tix are slated to go on sale at 10am Saturday; lawn tix are $26.50.

Meet Mr. Demon Potato Head

September 14th, 2009, 9:44 am by Greg

OK, OK, OK, already. We surrender to the heavy metal gods of the underworld.

Our favorite cartoon metalheads KISS are coming back to life – just like Pinocchio, and they’re bringin’ the “Sonic Boom” with ’em. That’s the title of the new KISS studio album slated for release on Tuesday, October 6 (exclusively at Wal-Mart).

Truthfully, we’re really not chomping at the bit to hear the new KISS album, but we are eagerly awaiting its release so that we can scarf up some of the oh-so-cool accompanying merchandise.

And lo, though they may not yet be members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame – let the moaning and gnashing of teeth commence – they must surely already be inducted into the Pop Culture Marketing Hall of Fame, right?

Well, if they weren’t before, you can bet that they will be once this baby hits the store shelves next month:

Now all bow down before the mighty masters of metal music merchandise, KISS…
