“This is from one of my more obscure albums – and believe me, there are plenty of them out there,” British blues legend John Mayall admitted by way of introducing “Dream About the Blues.”
Indeed. Mayall led his new band into The Egg on Wednesday to launch a short east coast tour in support of “Tough,” his 57th album – not counting various compilations and re-packagings.
57 albums? That’s a whole lotta blues.

“I bought a lot of singles, you know, 45s. But as far as the first album I bought, well, it would have been a blues record. It would have been a Freddie King album, probably.
It might have been `Freddie King Goes Surfin’,’ which was all instrumentals. I remember that I bought that one. You know, it had nothing to do with surf music, but they were trying to sell it, I guess. It’s all marketing.”
Kim Simmonds leads the current incarnation of Savoy Brown in the inaugural blast of the second annual Rockin’ on the River concert series at 5pm Wednesday, June 10. The free outdoor concert takes place in Troy near the Green Island Bridge, behind Ryan’s Wake.
